Cologne - Cork Twinning

Cologne is one of several cities, from all across the world, to have been twinned with Cork City

Links with Cologne were formally established in May 1988, in Cologne, and subsequently, when a party visited Cork in May 1989, when the second stage of the formal twinning ceremony was completed. Since then, the exchange has gone from strength to strength, especially in the fields of education, training, music and athletics.

Cork City is twinned with the city of Cologne, Germany since 1988.

Over the years many exchanges have taken place between the cities on various projects.
Over the past 10 years we have been inviting athletes from our twinned cities to the Cork Marathon and  more recently the city of Cologne have reciprocated by extending an invitation to Cork to participate in their annual marathon. Since 2011 athletes have been travelling to Cologne and the reports back have been overwhelmingly positive with some athletes making return visits.

Cork City Council, in conjunction with our partners in the Office for International Affairs, Cologne would like to invite 2 interested Cork runners to take part in the 2018 Cologne marathon.  The 2018 marathon takes place on Sunday, 7th October.

From The Cologne Marathon Organisers:

The City of Cologne will again be on fire on October 7, 2018!

More than 25,000 active sportspeople from all over the world are expected to join our RheinEnergieMarathon Cologne – and hundreds of thousands of residents will queue along the course and cheer for them.

There are marathons in numerous cities – but the Cologne Marathon is unique: a mixture of elite and John Doe runners, carnival, a folk and running festival!
The entire city is vivid and the spectators cheer passionately for the runners on the course!

Everywhere you may hear your name and you run through espaliers! And in the finish indulge yourself with culinary specialties and choose from the rich offer of snacks and beverages!  This is something that you have to experience!

The typical Cologne and warm-hearted way of the spectators let your run get unforgettable!

They cheer for you and "carry you to the finish" – it does not matter whether you are a top athlete, an ambitious recreational sportsman or a running connoisseur!

The scenery at Rudolfplatz is comparable to the ascent to Alpe d’Huëz at the Tour de France! Come to the marathon in "the most beautiful city of the world"!

The spectacular finish at the landmark of our city, Cologne Cathedral, is a gross swaying of emotions: exultation, tears of joy and the amazing feeling having beaten your body after such a long distance! You may really be proud of this!

The marathon distance is very popular among sport tourists but we also have a half marathon, a relay team marathon as well as races for the kids and youngsters.
