World U20 Championships - Day 4

4x100 - Women Qualify for Final, while Men Set National U20 Record

Bydgoszcz - Day 4 - Friday July 22nd 2016

The day started off with disappointment for Ireland when Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport) was disqualified in the Women's 200m, for a lane infringement.

Women's 4x100m Relay

World Championship U20 Women Team

The Women's relay was nothing short of dramatic. With two tto qualify automatically from each heat, heat 1 produced just three finishers from five starters - and Jamaica were disqualified for an out of zone baton change, leaving Spain and Ecuador as the only official finishers, with both going through automatically.

Heat two was slightly less dramatic - Fancied Great Britain & Northern Ireland failed to finish after a disasterous final changeover.

Ireland were in the outside lane in Heat 3 and ran strongly throughout, however in spite of a terrific finish, finished third behind Germany and 'winners' New Zealand. However another twist saw New Zealand also disqualified, leaving Ireland as automatic qualifiers. Ireland's finishing time was a season's best of 45.09 sec.
