Connacht Indoor Championships Day 1 2019
AIT Athlone
Saturday February 23rd 2019
Bantry AC's Darragh McElhinney took a phenomenal 23.35 seconds off Aaron Hanlon's (Clonliffe Harriers AC) previous record of 14:37.02, set when winning the Men's 5,000m, at the Boston University Opener meet, on December 2nd 2014.
Guesting at Day 1 of the Connacht Indoor Championships, in AIT Athlone yesterday, Darragh ran 14:13.67, to win, from a quality field.
Togher AC's Evan Byrne, who was also guesting, placed third in 14:30.11, while Mullingar AC's Jamie Battle, in 4th place, ran the third fastest Under-20 5,000m, in 14:37.10, just outside the old record set by Aaron Hanlon.

John Lenihan, An Riocht AC, on his way to winning the Munster Inter-Club Senior title, in Killeagh, 1989 - Photo credit: Des Barry/Cork Examiner
Thirty years ago, Cork athletes were to the fore when winning seven of the nine individual and team titles at the Munster Cross-Country championships held at Killeagh.
The fixture, known at the time as the Southern Region championships, took place on the lands of Pat Lynch at Aghadoe, just past Glenbower Wood on the outskirts of the village. Fr Liam Kelleher, then a curate at nearby Inch, was the driving force behind the promotion and he had secured sponsorship from Cork & Limerick Savings Bank (senior men), Imokilly Co-Op (senior women) and Hibernian Life (junior men) for the three races.
On an ideal early-spring day, a large crowd turned out to witness three exciting contests on a course that contained a number of strength-sapping hills and extreme descents. First off was the junior men and the name on everyone’s lips was that of John Murray from the North Cork club.
The Dromina youngster carried an unbeaten streak of 10 victories – including the BLOE U16 and U17 titles and the youths international in Scotland – into the race and he didn’t disappoint, leading from start to finish of the 7500m to defeat national junior champion Paul Logan from Limerick by eight seconds in a time of 23:16.
The late Jer Twomey finished fourth and with 15-year-old George Murray (brother of the winner, John Murray) sixth and Frank Egan 10th, North Cork were easy team winners, and also assured Cork of the county award.
Interestingly, Leevale, winners of the county junior and national BLOE U17 titles in the lead-up to the race, didn’t enter a team. In his preview in the Cork Examiner, Brendan Mooney stated: “The field, however, will be without the Leevale stars who helped the club to the county junior title earlier this month.
“The standard at junior level in Munster, and especially in Cork, is particularly high, and it is felt it would be unfair to expect them to sustain so many high class races. Leevale have decided that their athletes should be allowed to give total commitment to their respective colleges, over the coming weeks.”
The women’s race saw an easy victory for one of Cork’s outstanding athletes of the period, Valerie O’Mahony-Collins. Having won the Inter-Counties C-C in 1985 and 1986, she also numbered the Evening Echo Mini-Marathon amongst her many victories. Later that year, the Togher athlete added a national track title when winning the 1500m in a time of 4:24.20.
At Killeagh, she finished 11 seconds clear of Eileen Prunty (East Cork) with Veronica Colleran (Shannon) in third. Cork were easy county winners, Susan Jenkins (Leevale) in fourth and Joan Hough (St Finbarr’s) in sixth providing the back-up to the first two individuals.
The Leevale team of Susan Jenkins (fourth), Carmel Parnell (seventh), Brid Murphy (17th) and Niamh O’Sullivan (21st) were first team ahead of Waterford and Togher.
It’s to their credit that Parnell (who would go on to win World Masters titles on the track and over the country), Hough and O’Sullivan are still successfully competing three decades later, with the latter two mixing it with the best at the recent National Masters at Dundalk.
Munster Cross-Country Championships 1989
The senior men’s race was tailor-made for John Lenihan from the Riocht club. Showing the ability that would see him crowned World Hill Running champion two year later in Switzerland, the Kerryman relished the four circuits, which incorporated a steep hill, followed by a long, energy sapping drag, and a sharp descent, including two sharp bends.
Making his break at the end of the third lap, Lenihan increased his lead over Robert Costelloe – the Limerick man who had ran 48:05 for 10 miles at Ballycotton three years before – to cross the line a half-minute to the good, in a time of 29:46 for the 10km.
First 6 Senior Men: John Lenihan, Robert Costelloe, John Fitzgerald, Gerry Deegan, Noel Richardson and Liam O'Brien - Photo: Liam O'Brien
John Fitzgerald (Clonmel) was third, Gerry Deegan (Waterford), fourth, Noel Richardson (Limerick), fifth, and Liam O’Brien (East Cork), sixth. O’Brien was backed up by clubmate Donnacha O’Mahony, in seventh, Tony O’Leary (Leevale), eighth, Cormac O’Connor (Bandon), ninth, Bryan Meade (East Cork), 14th and Leonard O’Regan (Leevale), 15th, to give Cork victory, by a margin of eight points, over Limerick, with Tipperary in third.
Despite having three in the first 14, East Cork were pipped by Limerick (42 to 45 points) for the team award. Looking back to that day at Killeagh three decades ago, Liam O’Brien recalls: “it wasn’t the fairest of courses, Costelloe was head and shoulders ahead of Linehan at the time and if the race was held anywhere else, he would have won it.
“Linehan just cut loose on the downhill and that was that.”

Bandon AC's Phil Healy, currently rated Number 4 on the European Women's 400m Standings, is the only Cork athlete to be selected on the Irish team for Glasgow, early in March
Athletics Ireland Release
A strong Irish team of 16 athletes has been selected for the European Indoor Athletics Championships, in Glasgow, from March 1st to 3rd next.
The team will be led by a strong quartet of Phil Healy (Bandon), Ciara Mageean (UCD), Mark English (UCD), and Thomas Barr (Ferrybank). There is also a strong blend of youth and championship debutants.
Phil Healy is ranked 4th in the women’s 400m, with Mageean and English (1500m and 800m) both ranked 5th on the European Indoor lists.
Mark English was a European indoor Silver medallist, in Prague, in 2015, and has been in excellent form, winning his 6th national indoor title yesterday.
There are senior debuts, on the women’s side, for Molly Scott (SLOT) and Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn), in the 60m, Sophie Becker (St Joseph’s) in the 400m, and Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley), in the high jump.
It’s a good step up for the U20 athletes, with three members of the women’s world 4x100m silver medal-winning team running in the 60m, with Ciara Neville (Emerald) also competing as an individual qualifier. Also stepping up is world U20 high jump silver medallist Sommer Lecky.
On the men’s side, Cillin Greene (Galway City Harriers), in the 400m, Sean Tobin (Clonmel) in the 3,000m, Joseph Ojewumi (Tallaght) in the 60m, Conall Kirk (Annadale Striders) in the 800m, make International track debuts.
High Performance Director Paul McNamara said:
“This is a strong Irish team that is primed to put in a performance at this championship. Our more high profile athletes have had stellar seasons to date with Ciara, Phil, Mark, Siofra and Thomas very well placed on the European ranking lists.
“This event will provide an excellent transitioning opportunity for our talented crop of 2018 U20s, such as Molly, Ciara, Lauren and Sommer, while emerging athletes like Joseph Ojewumi, Cillin Greene and Sophie Becker have shown exciting form this season to earn their spots. This will be a good championships for Irish athletics.”

On February 13th, Cork Athletics Registrations totalled 4,797, compared to 4,609 on February 12th 2018 and 4,734 on February 14th 2017.
To date, fifty (50) of Cork's fifty six (56) registered clubs have registered athletes, leaving six clubs yet to register an athlete. Some clubs have registered the club itself, but no club members.
These clubs, and their athletes, are reminded that the insurance dispensation, whereby the 2018 insurance cover continued until the latter weeks of January, is no longer in force - unregistered athletes, coaches, officials and other club members are NOT covered by Athletics Ireland insurance for any purpose whatsoever, leaving those athletes and clubs in a precarious position.
With respect to registrations, some clubs have been very quick 'out of the starting blocks', while others are still just 'getting out of bed'
Some clubs have had problems with their Registration access or may only very recently have received their new Registration Log-in details. If your club is still experiencing login issues, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. 01-8869933 ASAP
Any athlete, coach, official, or any member acting in any capacity, who remains unregistered is NOT covered by Athletics Irelands insurance, for ANY purpose whatsoever, including training and/or competition.
Clubs are urged to register their athletes without further delay.

As can be seen from the image above, more information is now readily available via the Registration Data than previously. This information was always there to be 'gleaned', it's just easier to analyse now. Of particular interest include Renewal and New membership rates
As at February 13th, 46.7% of the 2018 members have been re-registered. This seems quite low, given that Unregistered members are NOT covered by Athletics Ireland insurance, for any purpose. Of course, there will have been drop-outs, with members moving, not-yet-registered, moving on to other sports, or simply not participating any more. Drop-out in the early teens is a recognised, ongoing, and worrying part of every sport in Ireland.
There are 811 new members on the list, representing almost 17% of the current total, with 292 new adult registrations, and 519 Juveniles.
Total Registrations are up 4.07% on the same date last year. It's early days yet, but, hopefully, this trend will continue through 2019
As per previous years, Bandon AC and Leevale AC head the list, as usual, by a distance, while four more clubs, Midleton AC, West Muskerry AC, St Catherine's AC and Togher AC have over 200 registrations, and a further eleven clubs exceeding 100 registered members. Three clubs have less than the minimum required registered membership numbers to constitute an Athletics Ireland Registered Club. A further six clubs have yet to register to register a single member - As above, If your club is still experiencing login issues, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. 01-8869933 ASAP.
Note: As of today, Friday February 15th, 51 clubs are now registered, Milstreet AC now have 35 registered members, and the Total Registrations stand at 4925 registered members.
NB: If your club has not fulled the requirements of having at least 10 registered members, along with the club itself being registered, then your club will NOT have Race Permit applications approved, as this is a Permit requirement.

Awaiting Sunday's Results
Report by Colette Kelly
At the December CYDI & Winter Coaching Series Meet, there was strong interest expressed that the series should continue in the New Year, so training resumed on Saturday January 12th, when, between the two sessions, 67 athletes took part, over a range of events.
The distance group also joined the CIT group, for a track session, in preparation for the indoor season.
The focus of the session was on preparation for indoor competition for the sprints, hurdles, jumps and shot put groups. The distance group had an easy track session, as many athletes were coming down off their cross country season. The javelin, discus and hammer groups continued their technique work, with their competition season still a little way off.
The next CYDI and Winter Coaching session will be on Saturday February 16th. As February and March are busy months in terms of competition, free dates are extremely hard to come by. Although the February 16th date clashes with the National Senior Indoor Championships, it was decided to go ahead with the CYDI / Winter Coaching session, as the target group are not of senior competition age.
However, there will be limited coaching events on the day, as several coaches will be attending the National Seniors.
The CYDI and Winter Coaching Series events that will proceed on February 16th are: Sprints, Hurdles, Javelin, Discus and Hammer.
Check-in for the CYDI group is from 12:45, with the session running from 1pm to 2:30pm, while check-in for the Winter Coaching group will be from 2:15pm, with the session running from 2:30 to 4:00pm.
The Distance Running group will also hold a session, in CIT, on February 16th, from 1:30pm to 3pm, with check-in at 1:15pm. This session will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get quality track time, before the Munster U12-U19 Indoor Championships, in Nenagh, on February 23 & 24th.
There will be no CYDI and Winter Coaching Series sessions during March, however we hope to organise more sessions during April, in the run up to the start of the outdoor Track & Field season.
Johnny Murphy, Liscarroll AC, National Boys Under-14 Indoor Combined Events Champion 2019
Hannah Falvey, Belgooly AC, National Girls Under-14 Indoor Combined Events Champion 2019, with Okwu Backari, Leevale AC, Bronze Medalist
Cork athletes reap the reward at the Athletics Ireland National Juvenile Indoor Combined Events Championships for all their hard training, Hannah Falvey, winner of the Girls Under-14 Combined Events Championships, while Okwu Backari, Leevale AC, took Bronze in the same event, and Johnny Murphy, Liscarroll AC won the Boys Under-14 Combined Events Championships.
All three athletes attended the Cork CYDI and Winter Coaching Series training sessions over the last couple of months.
