Comprehensive Calendar of Registered Athletics Ireland events in Cork

Grange-Fermoy AC's Bob Burke 4 Mile race took place under 'strange' conditions. It was the first Athletics Ireland race back, in Cork, since The Crosshaven 5k/10k, way back in March, just before athletics activities were suspended, due to Covid-19.

Today's event follows the club's own 'members only' race, run last night, over the same course, and used as a 'dry run' to try to iron out any issues prior to today's race proper.  Today's field was 'Invitation Only', and a high standard was set, with the men expected to finish under 23 minutes, while the women's standard was set at 26 minutes.

Combined with 'Race Starvation', this resulted in course records being set in both the mens and womens races, with Eoin Everard, Kilkenny City Harriers, winning in 19:05, while Aoife Cooke, Eagle AC, returned 21:52.  There were 48 men and 20 women in today's field, with athletes, both male and female, from all parts of the country.

The event was run under strict HSE & AAI Covid-19 protocols, with 'hand' timing, using a race clock, two cameras, and a video. Grange-Fermoy AC are to be commended for putting on this race, particularly as, with the numbers involved, it was planned as a loss-making event. However, important lessons have been learnt in the return to 'normal service'.  Not to take in any way whatsoever from this event, small steps such as this, must be taken on the road back. It is only by running the small events well that we will be able to take on the bigger ones later.
