A-plus for Adeleke and Juveniles on day 3 in Athlone

Tallaght’s Rhasidat Adeleke delivered another sprinting masterclass to win the U16 girls 200m in a championship best performance (CBP) of 24.46 on day 3 of the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone (April 1st).

Much was anticipated for Adeleke having won the U16 girls’ 60m in 7.55 seconds last weekend where the juveniles showed there is a hotbed of latent talent to come through in the future. The 15-year-old’s 200m time was a European U20 qualifying standard and just .01 off a European U23 standard such was the quality of her performance.

Ailbhe Doherty (Ennis Track) won the U15 girls’ 60m last week and toed the line this week in the 800m taking on Newport’s heroine Aimee Hayde. And she delivered with an outstanding 2:14.24 CBP ahead Hayde’s 2:16.02. Doherty was the fastest girl over the distance throughout all the age groups.

Thomas Bolton (MSB) was another to deliver a big CBP to win the U12 boys 600m in 1:40.37. There were a number of CBP’s in the hurdles too with Sean Rowley (Bree) winning the U13 boys’ 60m hurdles in 9.43 seconds and Daniel Ryan (Moycarkey Coolcroo) taking the U19 boys 60m hurdles in 8.16. Shane Monagle (Tramore) was a shade outside the CBP in the U18 boys 60m hurdles with 8.10.

David McDonald (Menapians AC) scorched to another Euro U20 standard winning the U19 boys 200m in 21.46 while Sean Thompson (Lucan Harriers) won the U19 boys triple jump with 14.13m on his last attempt.

Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn) was one a range of sprinters to complete the 60m and 200m double with gold in the U18 girls 200m with 24.70 – Ciara Deeley (Kilkenny City Harriers) added another silver medal in 25.06 after her excellent 400m last week behind Davicia Patterson (Beechmount Harriers). Lauren Cadden (Sligo) wasn’t far behind in 25.27 for bronze.

David Murphy (Gowran AC) won the U18 Boy's 200m in 21.97 seconds from Joseph Finnegan Murphy (Dublin Striders) in 22.25. The pair won gold in silver over the 60m last weekend where both clocked 6.94. Michael Farrelly (Portmarnock) added U16 boys’ 200m gold in 22.99.

Jonas Norvaisa (Clonliffe Harriers) was a big winner in the U14 boys’ shot with 12.66m while Kyle Ettoh (Leevale) won the U13 boys long jump in a CBP of 5.11m.
