What must be one of the oldest championships of its kind in the country, the East Cork road race event for men and women took place for the 35th time in the village of Ballynoe

It started off here back in 1980 when Castlemartyr man Pat Whyte of Midleton AC was the winner of the five miles in 25:18, still the fastest time for the tough four-lap course around the village

James McCarthy and Karen Grant continued their current good form when taking the individual titles.
McCarthy, winner at Ballintotis and Kiskeam in the previous eight days, led an East Cork clean sweep as he broke away from clubmates Sean McGrath and Kevin O’Brien to win in a time of 26:45. Former winner McGrath, in his first road race in a while, recorded 27:22 with O’Brien finishing in 28:10

With the first three not scoring in the team race, there was an exciting battle for club honours with Youghal winning for the first time in seven years. The seasiders just edged out East Cork on the countback rule as both clubs finished on 42 points

Midleton athlete Grant was first across the line in the women’s race over 2000m. Her time of 7:34 gave her four seconds to spare over her teammate Anna Doris with Fiona Santry (East Cork) taking the bronze in 7:47
