Streets of Cobh 5k 1998

The Streets of Cobh was a low key race held during Cobh Festival week each year. While participant numbers were quite low, the calibre at the front generally made up for this.

The race was a two lapper, and started outside sponsor, Miskella's Supervalu, at the far end of the town, and proceeded along the Low Road, past the Heritage Centre and the Railway Station, before turning back along the High Road.

This loop was repeated, with the finish at the bottom of the downhill section leading into the town. The fast downhill section on each lap made for "interesting" experiences for both participants and spectators; at the end of the first lap, runners experienced a fast downhill, followed by a hairpin right turn, leading many runners to virtually stop before needing to 'shift up yhe gears' again. Experienced and canny runners were able to reach out and grab the railing at the turn, enabling them to 'swing round' without losing too much momentume, and gain a march on their rivals.

The fast downhill frequently led to many participants 'overshooting' the finish line, making finish line recording, in those pre-chip times, a hazardous occupation.

The 1998 edition had two runners under 16 minutes, with a further five sub 17 minutes. Noteworthy in these results was, in 40th place, a certain Sean McGrath, then a youthful Junior running for the now defunct Glenbower AC.
