The Guileen 6

The Guileen 6 was a tough 6 mile race, organised around a local festival in the tiny east Cork village. Chief organiser was East Cork AC's Barry Moran. The event ran for 4 or 5 years in the late 1980's.

The course consisted of a long hill, almost a mile long, at the start, with a 4 mile loop from the mile mark.  The course was tough with several hills, but the final mile, a reversal of the first mile was ultra fast, being all downhill.....if you had anything left, as the downhill finish was immediatelly preceded by a steep, sapping, hill, also almost a mile long. Nevertheless, it attracted a strong, if small, field. As can be seen from the 1989 results, twenty nine of the forty finishers went sub-40, with the last finisher finishing just under 44 minutes , equalling approx. 7:15 miling, on a tough course.
