Intermediate Men's winner, Brian Meade, East Cork AC

INTERMEDIATE Men vies with the Leinster Novices for the biggest field in Irish Cross Country. The charge of over 300, in their various club and county singlets, is a great sight. After the first mile, it became clear that the battle for individual honours would be an all-Munster affair, with Clare’s Eamonn Grimes leading, from East Cork's Brian Meade and Gerry Wallace, Limerick's John Downes and West Limerick's John Scanlon. In the team races, the red of Cork was prominent, while the black and white of Sligo seemed to be doing best of the clubs.

Halfway through the race the commentator announced that John Downes was running without a number. It seems John was deemed ineligible, for finishing third in the National Senior Inter Counties CC last December. He went on in protest, crossed the finish line first and got embroiled in scenes with officials. Brian Meade was next in and official winner. He should not let the controversy affect his finest hour.

With two in the first three, and six in thirty, Cork regained their inter-county title after a lapse of four years.
Sligo, the Connaught senior champions, confirmed their early promise with a great B victory. This is a marvellous boost for athletics in the North-West. Michael Hannon and Co. we salute you!

All those junior girls who ran last year were eligible again this year, as the age group has been brought in line with the men. Not that this seems to make any difference - most girls in this grade seem to disimprove as they grow older.

The winner was Mullingar’s Glynis Lynch, who has another couple of years eligibility. This has been a great year for Limerick; they go into the record books as the first club to win the junior mens’ and junior women's titles in the same year.

A record number contested the veterans championship. It looked like a trip down memory lane, with so many champions of yesteryear in action. There were young vets like Richie Crowley, John Phelan and Liam Kealy, medium vets like Paddy Murphy, Mick Hayden and John Buckley, old vets like Billy Dwyer, Willie Dunne and Willie Morris.

Brendan Mooney came with a late surge to bring glory to Sligo. Tinryland’s Peter Murphy ran the race of his life. Brendan Sherlock from Monaghan did well. It was great to see old warriors like Jim Cardiff take the over-45 award. Tad hg Twomey won the over-50 and Declan Walsh the over-55.

In winning the team title Liffey Valley had their greatest day since the late Tommy Brennan's National Senior win in 1975.
Dublin retained the County title. The last race of the day, the Ladies Intermediate, is a result of the running boom. The first two across the line show the variety in backgrounds of women who dominate middle and distance running. Valerie Vaughan (21) from U.C.C. is a former child prodigy. Irene Gaffney (33) only took up the sport four years ago after the birth of her second child. Tullamore’s Ann Gorman (third) is also a late-comer to the sport. Irene had the consolation of leading Dublin to the county crown. In the club battle Mullingar just pipped their Midland rivals Tullamore by a point. This race incorporated the inaugural women’s veteran championship. Victory went to Evelyn McNelis (Naas).

Two things struck me as I left Kilbarry; the lure of a national medal is still as strong as ever; and, judging by the spread of honours nationwide, the sport is in a very healthy condition.
