Cork Examiner Guinness Cork Half-Marathon Results Supplement

THE Guinness Cork Examiner Half marathon held on St. Patrick's Day was an outstanding success with over 1,200 runners participating.

From the minute the Lord Mayor Aid. Liam Burke TD, signalled the start at Grattan Street, to the finish outside the Imperial Hotel at South Mall, it was an enjoyable event for both runners and spectators alike.

The organisation of the half marathon by the Friends of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Cork Branch, under the chairmanship of John Whelan was outstanding. The proceeds of the half marathon go towards the establishment of a permanent headquarters for wheelchair users in the Munster area and here a range of facilities will be provided.

The half marathon was an exciting and colourful affair and two groups in particular made a very special impact special impact. These were the Army and Naval teams, who ran in formation chanting and singing en route.  

They received a tremendous reception from spectators and certainly broke the monotony of the 13 miles run for teh participants. One of the  big questions was which of them would cross the finishing line first and it was the blue attired Naval team that had that experience of competing in last year's event obviously paying dividends.

The army team followed them a short time later and encouraged by commentator Toe Holden standing on the balcony of the Imperial Hotel they dashed up the South Mall, breaking the magical two hours mark by a matter of seconds. They were watched by the officer commanding Southern Command, Brig. General Tom Waters who was obviously delighted with their performance.

James Whelan, PRO of the organising committee said they were absolutely delighted with the success of the event and he thanked the main sponsors, Guinness and Ihe Cork Examiner for their support, without which it would be impossible to run the event.

Indeed, a huge array of people contributed to the success of the half- marathon. Keanes Seiko Timing was in action on Sunday when Pat Keane and his team operated their sophisticated timing devices throughout the route.

Glanmire Electronics were hard at work computing the results.

Cork Crystal donated special prizes for the 100th winners, in sequence, from 100 right through to 800, with a special prize for the latter to commemorate the Cork 800 year.

Voluntary organisations played role in manning feed stations and stewarding the 13-mile route. These included the Red Cross, St. John’s Ambulance, Civil Defence, Venture Scouts, and community associations, Cork Corporation, CIE and the Gardai all cooperated wholeheartedly with the organisers.

O'Shea's Electrical provided the communications equipment and Mick Burke and his CBs were also in action. CMP, Punches and Vita Cortex are other Cork companies whose help proved invaluable, and the staff of the Impcrial Hotel were marvellous in organising the race headquarters.

West Cork Travel and Dan Air have contributed a holiday for two in Jersey for the lucky winner of the donation card promotion and the winner will be announced later.

The medical team of Drs. Fitzgerald and Cahill, and physiotherapist Mrs. Cahill were in action on the day and this was one of the most important of the teams whose services were available on Marathon Sunday.

The winners of the special Cork Crystal prizes for the 100th winners, in sequence from 100 to 800, are as follows: 100th, Ian Kohler, Leevale; 200, Kevin Nugent, Dungarvan; 300th, Don O'Sullivan, Clogheen; 400th, Patrick Burns, Fair Hill; 500th, Ml. Horgan, Bally volane; 600th, Weeshie Fogarty, Killarney; 700th, Patricia Kelly, Fermoy; 800th, John Martin Black rock.
