The Telecom Alcatel Bandon '10' which was held on Saturday, July 13, saw a new titleholder crowned with the Dungarvan runner Tony Ryan proving a most deserving winner.
The race run in a continual downpour proved a difficult task for not alone competitors ,but also officials and spectators alike. Two hundred and thirty nine runners faced the starter Con Murphy (Chairman Bandon Town Commissioners), the number being well down on previous years, but this was to be expected in view of the conditions on the night.
The first mile was completed in a time of 4:40 with a group of seven in contention. T. Ryan, J. Kelly (Liverpool and District Harriers), J. Buckley (Barrs), D. McCarthy (Youghal), M. Lawton (Leevale), Pierce O'Mahony (Leevale) and S. Harte (Barrs). This group were together at the two mile mark. By the three mile mark the leading group was down to four with Ryan, Kelly, Buckley and Lanton setting the pace. The three mile mark was reached in 14:58. By the half-way mark the leading group was down to two with Buckley slightly adrift, this was reached in a time of 24:36.
Ryan and Kelly were together until 6 miles was reached — when the runners met the only climb on the course. Here Ryan opened a slight gap on Kelly which by the 7 mile mark had grown to thirty metres. Even though as hard as Kelly tried over the remaining 3 miles, he was unable to catch the fleet footed Dungarvan man who came home in a time of 49:08 with Kelly 41 seconds adrift and John Buckley holding on to be third from D. McCarthy and M. Lawton.
The first lady finisher was Marion Lyons (St. Finbarrs) in a time of 59:24, ahead of Catherine Hennessy (Slaneyside) and Carmel Lynch (U.C.C.).
The first veteran was J. Cregan (Croom) in 54.56 from J. O'Callaghan (Leevale) 55:77 and Flor O'Leary (St. Finbarrs) 57:47.
The Inter-club was won by St. Finbarrs, with Leevale second and St. Finbarr's 'B' third.
The prizes were presented by Dr. John Cronin Managing Director Telecom Alcatel Ltd. who were the sponsors of this event for the second year. Certificates and a special medallion suitably engraved was presented to all finishers by the organisers Bandon Athletic who are this year celebrating their 21st anniversary.
