The Echo Virtual Women's Mini-Marathon Medal 2020

Echo Women's Mini Marathon

The Echo Women's Mini Marathon is the biggest event of its kind in Munster. It has grown from its beginnings in 1980, with only 300 participants, to over 10,000 participants in recent years.

Whether you are a seasoned runner, on a fitness mission, or are joining friends to enjoy the walk, the Mini Marathon is suitable for everyone, with women choosing to run, jog or walk depending on their fitness level.

Each year, approx. €1M euro is raised for local, national and international charities and organisations. Many Million euro has been raised for charity by participants, over the last four decades, with the participants themselves deciding which charity they will support.  The Echo Women's Mini Marathon has become a key event on every charity’s fundraising calendar.

Charities - If your charity isn't listed on the Charity List, why not register? It's absolutely free to register, and it's a great way to both ensure that your charity is highlighted, and also a great way of recruiting fundraisers.

Charities

Run, jog or walk 6k for your chosen charity or just for fun! Charities are asked to ensure that all participants fund raising on their behalf are registered to take part in the event.  All charitable funds raised by participants are payable directly to the charity concerned. If you would like to participate to raise funds for a particular charity, please contact the charity of your choice directly, regarding sponsorship cards, t-shirts etc.

Please remember that even if you have a sponsorship card from your chosen charity, you must officially register with the Echo Women's Mini Marathon.

Sadly, due to Covid-19, and the ensuing HSE and Athletics Ireland guidelines, we are unable to hold the actual event. So... we are asking YOU to row in behind them and use the Echo Virtual Women's Mini-Marathon to help them, by fundraising for your chosen charity.

In a 'normal' year, all profits from the Echo Women's Mini Marathon go directly to Cork County Board of Athletics Ireland. The proceeds are used to develop, promote and foster athletics in Cork. Cork Athletics is a not-for-profit, entirely voluntary, organisation, and is a Registered Sports Body [, Registered GS Number 3014 - Cork County Board (Athletics Association of Ireland) - under Section 235 Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997].  All race stewards and officials are unpaid volunteers, drawn largely from the athletic community.

This year, however, Cork Athletics County Board are instead minimising all entry charges, absorbing many, and will be donating all proceeds, including all sponsorship monies to Marymount Hospice, in memory of our late Competition secretary, Mary Meagher, who died there last January. Cork Athletics itself will also supplement this donation.

For insurance purposes, all participants must officially register to take part in the Echo Virtual Women’s Mini Marathon.

Why can't this year's Echo Mini-Marathon go ahead around the Marina/Blackrock/Kennedy Park, as in previous years?

This year, due to Covid-19, and the ensuing HSE and Athletics Ireland guidelines, we are unable to hold the actual event. Currently the guidelines allow a maximum of 200 people to attend, with that limit extending to 500 in the next phase of reopening, and hopefully, 5,000 in the following phase. The Echo Cork Women's Mini-Marathon normally attracts close to 8,000 participants - before you add the approx. 200 organising volunteers and support personnel ....and the hundreds/thousands of spectators, families and supporters. In short, sadly, there is no possibility of being able to go ahead with the actual event on Sunday September 20th

FAQ List

Why is a virtual event being held?

It would have been a very easy decision to simply cancel altogether, however, Cork Athletics realises that, each year, Echo Cork Women's Mini-Marathon participants raise an estimated €1M for many, many charities. The potential loss of this revenue would be a major blow for these charities, who are already reeling from the losses from their cancelled street collection days. So we are asking YOU to row in behind them and use the Echo Virtual Women's Mini-Marathon to help them, by fundraising for your chosen charity.

FAQ List

What is a virtual walk/run?

A virtual walk or run is a walk or run that can be done anywhere you want, and from any location you choose, so you can do it in your own town/locality, or maybe in a special (to you) location. [But please abide by HSE guidelines in effect on the day]

FAQ List

How long is the virtual walk/run?

The virtual walk or run is 6km (3.7 miles). This is the same distance as the normal Mini-Marathon route around the Marina-Blackrock-Kennedy Park. It doesn't matter if you are a bit under/over that...we won't be sending someone out to check <grin>

FAQ List

Do I have to complete my virtual 6km on a specific day or time?

No, you can complete your 6km walk or run on any day and time you choose between Friday September 18th and Sunday September 27th. The nominal date for the event is still Sunday September 20th. The spread from Friday 18th to Sunday 27th is just to facilitate everyone who may be working, and to allow for bad weather on the day.
FAQ List

Where can I complete my virtual 6km walk/run?

You can complete your virtual 6km walk or run in any location of your choice. It is a good idea to plan your 6km run/walk route before you start. The 6km should be completed on footpaths and/or pathways. Avoid roads or any areas with busy traffic. Please follow HSE Covid-19 guidelines.
FAQ List

Can I walk or run with a family member or friend?

Yes, but Participants should adhere to government and HSE Covid-19 guidelines, including social distancing . Please maintain a social distance of at least two metres while taking part in the walk/run and avoid handshakes, hugs, high fives, etc.

FAQ List

How can I track my distance and time my walk/run?

You can track and time your virtual walk or run any way you like, even if it is a 'guesstimate'. We will accept results on an “honour” basis. A watch or smartphone application with a GPS facility, or a fitness tracker, are probably the easiest ways to track and time your walk or run, but it's not necessary to have one.
