Marathon Route Changes

There are a number of changes to this year's routes, primarily due to avoidance, as far as possible, of churches, of all demoninations.  For previous marathons, church services hasn't an issue, however changing the Marathon to a Sunday gave rise to a lot of logistical headaches, including church services and lots of sporting events.

The first major change to the Marathon comes in the first three miles, where the section between Christy Ring Bridge and North Gate Bridge and back again to Christy Ring. Instead the route heads North over Christy Ring Bridge and out to Blackpool on the regular route. The route then remains the same as before, until the section between 18 and 21 miles, where radical changes take place.

The second major changes comes the 18 Mile mark. After turning onto Lower Friar's Walk, by the former Manhattan Bar, the course turns right, onto Connolly Road, where previously it continued straight on to Ballyphehane Church - a location that had to be avoided this year.  After turning onto Connolly Road, the route continues straight on, across Pearse Road, and up the hill, passing Tory Top Park, after which it turns immediately left.

At the North end of Tory Top Park, it turns right and immediately left - probably best described as "a jiggle" - into Reendowney Place  and on through Clareville, and left onto Pouladuff Road. It rejoins the old course at Pearse Road, where it turns right towards, and past, the Lough.

The third change comes after passing the Lough. Continuing up Hartland's Avenue, the route now crosses Glasheen Road, onto Dorgan's Road, before turning left onto Magazine Road, right again, onto St. Francis Avenue. At the end of St. Francis Avenue, there is a left turn onto College Road, by Brookfield, before turning right, into Orchard Road.

At the Orchard Road - Wilton Road junction, there is another "jiggle", crossing Wilton Road, into Farranlea Road, on to Farranlea Park, before rejoining the old course again at the Model Farm Road - Farranlea Park junction.

The final major change comes in the final mile. After crossing North Gate Bridge, the course heads directly up North Main Street, as far as Washington St., where it turns left.  Passing the 26 Mile mark, at the main door to St. Augustine's church, the route turns left onto Grand Parade, before swinging immediately right into Patrick's St, for the final run-in.  The finish is at exactly the same point as previous years, but the approach is from the opposite direction.
