Organiser Niamh Ahern:
Hello everyone!

My brother, Peter Ahern, Stephen O' Brien and I, are organizing a 5km charity run/walk to be held in the grounds of Blarney Castle on the 29th of November in aid of Build4Life/Cystic Fibrosis!

The cost of the run/walk is €10 per person.

Registration for the event is now available online on Event master - see link below. You can also register on the morning of the run at the Blarney GAA Clubhouse from 9.00 a.m. - 10.30 a.m. Race numbers will be distributed here also at this time.

Your €10 will go towards much needed funds for the charity Build4Life/CysticFibrosis. It will directly fund specialised respiratory equipment for the new adult isolated inpatient bedrooms in Ward 5B in Cork University Hospital (CUH). If you would like to make a further donation or are unable to take part in this event and would like to contribute, please click on the link below. We will greatly appreciate any donations received.

The founder of Build4Life, Joe Browne, is the guest speaker and he will address all at 10.35 a.m. in GAA grounds. This will be followed by a short warm up.

Route
The run/walk will commence at 11 a.m.close to GAA grounds and will continue up the avenue to Blarney Castle Estate.

It will mirror the route of the highly successful 5km Run/Walk organised by RTE's Operation Transformation last February.  Check out video of this run!

Refreshments will be available in GAA Clubhouse after the event.

Come along and enjoy a scenic run/walk in the Blarney Castle grounds as well as supporting this great cause!!

Buggies and bikes are not permitted at the run/walk.

From the organisers:

We would like to add this is a charity very close to our hearts. Peter and I lost our brother Dónal Ahern to CF at the tragically young age of 28 in 2010. Dónal, greatly loved by all who knew him, particularly in his home village of Blarney, was an extraordinarily, resilient and courageous man of whom we will always be incredibly proud. Regrettably and sadly for him, he endured unspeakably difficult days, particularly towards the end of his life, owing to the inevitable progression of the illness.

In 2010 and years previous to that, the sophistication of care & facilities was definitely not at the level experienced by CF patients in Ireland today. It simply was not there and those of us who have lost loved ones to the illness must make our peace with the grim reality of those times. However, we do take considerable solace from the contribution Build4life has made in such a short period of time. The life quality of CF patients has improved immeasurably as a direct consequence of their tireless charity work.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system of about 1200 children and adults in Ireland (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus. This mucus clogs the lungs leading to life threatening lung infections, obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body to break down/absorb food.

The impact of CF can vary from one person to another. There are some people with CF who live until their teens and there are others that live in to their fifties. Ireland has among some of the most severe strains of CF. It also has the highest incidence (per head of population) in the world with three times the rate of the United States and the rest of the European Union.

Many thanks in advance for your support, We would like to re-iterate our appreciation for any donation you can make - it will make a difference.
