Louise receives the award for her performance in winning the Irish Schools Senior Girls 800m title.

She also achieve double success, in the 800m and 1,500m at the Munster Schools T&F Championships.

Since then, Louise has achieved the qualifying time for next month's European Junior Championships, in Sweden. She first attained the standard, at the Irish Miler's Club meet, in Belfast, running 2:09.01, and, last week, lowered her time to 2:08:15.

Louise was a finalist in the 800m, at last year's Youth Olympics, in China. Her main event is the 800m, but she also competes at 400m and 1,500m. She says that she "Runs to race. A good time is a bonus." She is coached by her father Ray Shanahan, who represented Ireland as athlete, coach and manager....it's in the genes!

Louise recently sat the Leaving Cert, and hopes to study Physics and Astrophysics in UCC.

Her next outing on the track is at this weekend's Glohealth Athletics ireland National Junior Championships. She will then run in the 64th Cork City Sports, next Tuesday, July 7th. Lousie says that she has "probably been at Cork City Sports since I was born!" Her direct involvement with the sports started as a "basket girl", while she now features on the competitive stage.
