JOHN HEGARTY CUP

John Hegarty was a man who gave almost 40 years of service to Cork athletics and he will now be honoured with a cup in his memory which will be presented for the first time at the forthcoming county cross-country championships.

John, a native of Carraig na bhFear, passed away a year ago last March after serving as Vice-Chairman of the Cork County Board for over 30 years. In that period he gave of his time at practically every cross-country and track meeting held in Cork.

This was alluded to by Paddy Buckley, Chairman of the County Board, who thanked the Hegarty family, in particular John’s nephews Donal Hegarty and John Mulcahy, for donating the beautiful trophy which will be presented each year to the winning junior men’s team.

Noreen Murphy of the Carraig na bhFear club and former chairperson of the County Board also praised John’s loyalty to both club and county, saying he was totally dedicated to both.

Presenting the cup, John Mulcahy said athletics was John’s great passion in life and that he loved to be involved in the sport and that was why the family decided to commemorate his memory in this way.
