Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month - January 2017 - Award Citation

On January 28th last, in Bratislava, Alex set a World Leading Time, with a 5m race Walk win against a strongInternational Field. In February, he followed this performance when he won the 5km Race Walk, at the AAI Games, in AIT Indoor Arena,in Athlone, in a personal best, and then set a new National Record at the Athletics Ireland National Record of 18:50.70, and, in the process, breaking Rob Heffernan's previous record of 18:51.46, set in 2008. Alex has already qualified for both 20k and 50k Race Walks at this year's World Championships, in London.

This afternoon, Tuesday March 14th, 2017, Alex Wright, Leevale AC, was the recipient of the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for January. Alex was accompanied by his fiance, Lauren Whelan and Iarla O'Connor, along with members of Leevale AC.

About Us

Cork Athletics County Board is a constituent member of Athletics Ireland. Cork Athletics is the governing body, administering athletics, track and field (T&F), cross-country (XC) and running in county Cork. The Board comprises elected representatives of constituent athletic clubs and running clubs. Cork County Board AAI organises Championship races and competition, including road, track & field (T&F) and Cross-country (XC), at junior, juvenile, senior and masters levels, and selects representation for the county. In addition, training and education is provided for coaches and officials. The Board also regulates the Athletics Ireland race/event permit (licence) process for county Cork.
