Cork City Sports Athletic Person of the Year 2016

Rob Heffernan was awarded Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Year for 2016, this afternoon, Friday February 18th, 2017, at a function in the River Lee hotel.

The Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Year is selected from the twelve monthly Athletics Person of the Month recipients from the previous year.

At the same function Pat Walsh (Cork Athletics, Cork City Sports and Skibbereen AC), was honoured with the inaugural Cork City Sports Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifetime contribution to athletics,

Athletics Person of the Month - January 2016


Claire Gibbons-McCarthy (Leevale AC) was presented with the Cork City Sports Cork Athlete for the month of January. Claire won the Waterford Half Marathon in a personal best time of 1:16:45 on the 9th January.  She subsequently went on to improve on this in the Barcelona International Half Marathon in February with a very impressive time of 1:15:18, securing victory in the Over 35 section.

Athletics Person of the Month - February 2016


Phil Healy (Bandon AC and UCC) was the Cork City Sports Athlete for the Month of February. Phil’s achievements for that month were outstanding, she had a busy month of indoor racing at the ultra-modern Athlone IT Indoor track culminating in a double gold medal performance at the national senior championships in the 60m and 200m. Making a welcome return to top class sprinting form again Phil began the month of February by winning both the 60m and 200m at the national Under 23 championships on the 3rd of the month. Three days later she set a new national under 23 record of 7.35sec for the 60m. at a National League event.  The following day she won the 200m at the AAI games. On the 12th of February Phil won the Inter Varsity 200m title. and on the 17th she came a very credible 4th at the AIT International Grand Prix 60m

Athletics Person of the Month - March 2016

The March award went to Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC). Hanrahan won the prestigious Ballycotton 10 mile road race in a very creditable time of 49min 01sec. He was subsequently selected on the Irish Half-Marathon team for the European Championships in Amsterdam.

 

Athletics Person of the Month - April 2016
In April the Leevale Women’s road relay team were awarded the Cork City Sports Athlete Of the Month Award.  The team composed of sisters Michelle & Carol Finn and Lizzie Lee, recorded their 3rd victory in a row at the National Road Relay in Dublin defeating a fancied Crusaders AC in the process.

 

Athletics Person of the Month - May 2016


Leevale coach, Donie Walsh was the recipient of the May award.   Donie was selected to travel to Rio as the Athletics Ireland endurance coach joining two of his athletes Lizzie Lee and Michelle Finn will be competing in the marathon & 3000m steeplechase respectively. Donie was returning  to the Olympics a mere 44 years after he competed in the marathon in Munich in 1972

Athletics Person of the Month - June 2016


Charlie O’Donovan of Leevale AC was the June  award winner. Charlie received the award for winning the Junior 1500m at the 65th Cork City Sports in an outstanding time of 3:54:36. This time was inside the qualifying standard for European Youth Championships in Tbilisi and earned him selection for the Irish team.

Athletics Person of the Month - July 2016


The July awards went to  Daragh McElhinney of  Bantry AC and Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai.  Darragh had an excellent performance in the 1500m at the Schools Home International, in Kent, where he produced a stunning finish to take victory in a high class field. Darragh was one of just four Irish winners in the top quality international event.

Athletics Person of the Month - August 2016
Togher AC athlete Robert Heffernan was the Cork City Sports athlete of the month for August 2016. Robert travelled to Rio to take part in his fifth Olympic games to compete in the 50K race walk. The race was a gruelling event in the Brazilian heat and humidity in which 30% of the athletes were unable to finish the 50K distance. Robert finished 6th in a time of 3:43:55.

Athletics Person of the Month - September 2016
The September award went to Emma Murphy of St. Finbarr’s Athletic Club.  Emma was the clear winner of the 35th Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon in a time of 22:03 which was held on the streets of Cork on the 25th September.

Athletics Person of the Month - October 2016
Sinead Kevany of Midleton AC was the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for October. Sinead was an impressive winner of both the Cork County and Munster Novice Cross Country Championships in that month.

Athletics Person of the Month - November 2016
Carmel Parnell of Leevale AC was the November recipient. Carmel  is one of the most consistent performers in the history of the British and Irish Master Home International Cross Country. In November, she competed in Glasgow and won her 8th consecutive and 11th overall age group title. Carmel won the Over 60 section along with leading Ireland to a team victory as well

Athletics Person of the Month - December 2016
Vicki Cusack (Davis College, Mallow and Liscarroll AC) was the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for December. At the Athlone IT indoor track, Vicki was a member of the Irish Intermediate Girls Schools Team that finished second at the Home International Combined Events competition.  Vicki earned her place on the team by finishing 3rd in the Irish Championships the previous month.

Cork Athletics County Board is a constituent member of Athletics Ireland. Cork Athletics is the governing body, administering athletics, track and field (T&F), cross-country (XC) and running in county Cork. The Board comprises elected representatives of constituent athletic clubs and running clubs. Cork County Board AAI organises Championship races and competition, including road, track & field (T&F) and Cross-country (XC), at junior, juvenile, senior and masters levels, and selects representation for the county. In addition, training and education is provided for coaches and officials. The Board also regulates the Athletics Ireland race/event permit (licence) process for county Cork.
