January 22 – Celtic International Cross Country

Cork athletes Fearghal Curtin and Luke Horgan win Gold team medals on Irish U17 Team.

Fearghal Curtin (Youghal AC) and Luke Horgan (Leevale AC) competed on the U17 Irish team at the Celtic International Cross Country race in Cardiff on Sunday 20th January. Thankfully the flight departed with both the U17 Girls and Boys teams from Dublin on Saturday morning with only a minor delay despite severe weather conditions in Wales.  A snow covered ground greeted them on arrival much to the delight of the athletes. The race was held at Blackweir Fields, Cardiff right across the road from their hotel.  The venue resembled a ski resort on Sunday as there had been very heavy snowfall.  This made it heavy going for the lads as they had a gruelling 5,650m run a lot of which was through woodland with underfoot conditions difficult and very chilly.  However all the athletes gave a great account of themselves and won the team event beating Scotland by two points; Wales and Ulster also had teams.  First in were Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis Track) 3rd, Pierre Murchan (Celtic DSD) 4th both given a time of 19.47 as they were so close; next in was Fearghal Curtin of Youghal AC 6th 20.07 and Luke Horgan of Leevale 10th 20.46. This was a brilliant achievement for this team and especially for the Cork athletes Fearghal and Luke. Well done also to the girls team which were also victorious and to Siofra O’ Flaherty who won the race; her team included Eimear Fitzpatrick ,  Isobel Odlum  and Aoife Mulroy. Unfortunately Aoife Hamilton of West Waterford who also qualified could not compete on the day.  Many thanks to team managers John McGrath and Evelyn O’ Reilly for looking after lads so well.

The Charleville Half-Marathon www.charlevillehalf.com takes place this year on Sunday 23rd September 2012.

This race which goes by the slogan “The Flattest, Straightest and Fastest Half-Marathon in Ireland”, is set to provide a high quality event which allow runners to run a fast time over the flat course.  The course has been measured and certified to International standards by AIMS (The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) and will be using the best Chip timing available through Championchip. This demonstrates the lengths that race organisers are willing to go to ensure the race is of the highest quality.

Registration for the race can be done through their website http://www.charlevillehalf.com/registration/

And it is also possible to get a postal application form by emailing charlevillehalf@gmail.com or phoning Michael on 086 3168954.

This year’s race is set to have a top class field take part with over 30 of Ireland’s elite male and female distance runners, including a number of Olympians. Most of these are taking part in order to make use of the fast flat course to set a fast time while others are using this race to gauge their fitness in the build up to the Dublin Marathon. Most runners in the race will use the race to set themselves up for the winter cross country and road race season.

The names on the elite athlete list is quiet impressive and indicates that it will be one of the most competitive distance races of the year. The fact that so many of Irelands elite runners are set to attend indicates that this is a race not to be missed. If you want to get your winter season off to a good start then get your entry in soon at www.CharlevilleHalf.com

August 11 – 4th for Rob in the 50Km Walk in the Olympics

There is huge delight in the athletics community after a wonderful performance by Robert Heffernan of Togher in the 50Km Walk in the London 2012 Olympics.  Robbie finished 4th in a new Irish Record Time.  Rob knocked over 8 minutes off the old Irish record.

The race was a very exciting affair.  Rob, encouraged by enthusiastic and intense Irish Support all around the course, was 8th at the 40K mark and moved up to 4th place over the last 10K.  Third place almost looked possible at one stage as the third placed athlete from China struggled, but he held on to take bronze.  Rob also had a great performance in the 20Km walk finishing 9th earlier this week!

Robert’s performance is one of the greatest performances by an Irish athlete at the Olympics, a performance he can be very proud of.  Well done Robbie!

Well done also to the other Cork Olympians who were in action in the Track and Field in London – Derval, Ciarán and Marian!

Best of Luck to Olive who is in action in the women’s 20Km walk @ 5pm this afternoon!
