Leevale's Louise Shanahan Finishes Second, to qualify for the Final, in Heat 1 of 800m at Youth Olympics Nanjing, China

Louise Shanahan ran in Lane 7 in today's Heat 1 (of 3) of the 800m at the Youth Olympics, in Nanjing, China. Mareen Kalis (Germany) won in 2:05.67.  Shanahan was in 4th place, tucked in behind the leading three, going through the bell in 61.5.  The leader tied up badly with 300m to go and was overtaken by Kalis, who strode away from the field.  Shanahan quickly overtook the longtime leader, into third place.  On the bend, she went into third place, and second coming into the finishing straight, but had to battle all the way to the line. Louise's finishing time was an SB of 2:09.58, making her 6th fastest overall.

The fastest 8 places, from the three heats, qualify for the final. Heat two was won in 2:08.99, by Bello (Italy).  The third & final heat was won in 2:07.67, by Martha Bisset (Ghana)

At the time of writing, Eoin Sheridan, competing in the discus was in 9th place with 1 throw to go and 8 to qualify

Postscript: 16:15 - Eoin Sheridan finished in 12th place, with a best of 53.63.  He was rated 8th coming into the event with a PB/SB of 58.44
