North Cork AC as part of the Ballyhoura Series of road races. The club is
asking for the support of club athletes from all around Cork and Munster in

generous prize fund for the top 6 male/female finishers and the first finisher
in each age category. Elite places are available for sub 72min men and sub
83min women. There will be pacemakers for runners going at 7min mile pace and 8
min mile pace.

5km. Teams can comprise two, three or four runners to cover the four legs of
the relay. There are prizes for athletic clubs, Corporate/Business,
Sports teams and Family/friends teams to encourage people from a variety of
backgrounds to compete together or against each other.

May 27 – Cork
County Jnr, Snr & Masters T&F Cancelled
There was
very sad news for the athletics community yesterday with the news Joe O’Flynn
of Leevale had passed away. As a mark of
respect the county junior, senior & masters T&F which were scheduled
for Sunday have been cancelled.

JOE O’FLYNN served athletics tirelessly for decades and generations of athletes in
Cork and beyond are indebted to him for his dedication and efficiency in
carrying out duties from time-keeping to managing teams at county, provincial
and national levels.
Joe was known
in the broader athletics community as the manager of Cork teams who have won
honours at every level in road, and cross-country running under his stewardship
over the last 30 years. He also devoted
himself to the less glamorous duties that help grassroots competition survive
and prosper.
For many
years he was a recorder at County and Munster Cross-Country Championships;
whatever the weather, be it rain, hail, snow, fog or gales, he was to be
inevitably found in the middle of the field, far from shelter, handing out
numbers and singlets or taking results. He was usually the first to arrive at
these events and often the last to leave, waiting until the end to ensure that
results have been meticulously recorded and checked.
During the
summer, Joe came into his own as a finish judge and was a familiar figure at
juvenile, schools, senior and masters' competitions at local, county,
provincial, national and – on occasion – international levels. While many
people struggle with the stopwatch since the advent of electronic timing, Joe
continues to multi-task – taking times, calling results and counting laps.
On a personal
level, Joe was highly regarded and respected for his hard work and honesty. A
true gentleman, he was unfailingly pleasant and always arrived at every event
prepared and instinctively knew how to deal with any problem or situation that
arose.
Joe was a
very proud member of Leevale athletic club.
He competed for them in the past and has held numerous positions on the
club committee.
The athletics
community in Cork extends its’ deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
Arrangements:
Reposing at his
home, Somerton Drive, Ballinlough from 12 noon on Sunday. Liturgical Reception
at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Ballinlough on Sunday at 7pm. Requiem Mass on
Monday at 3pm, followed by burial in Barnahely Cemetery. http://www.rip.ie/death_notices_detail.asp?NoticeID=135876

April 8 – Ballintotis 4
Ballintotis will
again host the opening evening fixture on the extremely busy Cork road running
calendar on Wednesday April 20. A
year ago, the inaugural ‘4’ miler at the picturesque venue, located just off
the Main N25 road between Midleton and Castlemartyr, proved an outstanding
success with nearly 450 runners taking part.
This year’s race was
officially launched by the Lakeside at Loughaderra with last year’s overall
winner James McCarthy and the ladies winner Rhona Lynch joining the local
committee to kick start the countdown to an occasion that will again see all
proceeds going towards the Ballintotis Area Community Council Building Fund.
East Cork AC who
previously held the fixture in nearby Castlemartyr are again to the fore in the
organisation and promotion of the race as are members of the highly respected
Ballycotton Running Promotions team.
Currently the main
objective of the Ballintotis community is the erection of a Community Centre
adjacent to the Church grounds and with this in mind, a major fund raising
campaign has been underway for the past two years. In fact all going well the
hope is that by the time the running fraternity return for the 2012 Ballintotis
‘4’ the new construction will be in place.
But for this year
at least all the focus will be on the Car Park of St Colman’s Church which will
be transformed into the headquarters for this year’s race. The start line
(slightly altered from last year to allow greater space) is approximately 200
meters from the race base and the course will see the runners pass the Car Park
as they set out on what is predominantly a fast flat course along quiet country
roads.
Entry fee for the
event is 10 euro, with all finishers receiving a souvenir tee shirt. There is a wide range of prizes in all
categories along with a plentiful supply of spot prizes. For those who make the
headlines up front some attractive prizes are on offer topped off by a mountain
bicycle for first man and first lady across the line, both of which have again
been kindly sponsored by Trabolgan Holiday Centre. Race time on Wednesday 20 is 8pm
sharp, with all participants urged to arrive early and follow the advice of
stewards and gardai.
Meantime a non
competitive walk will also be held beginning at 6.30pm over the same
course. Again entry fee for
adults is 10 euro which automatically entitles the participants to the
aforementioned commemorative tee shirt. Children
accompanied by an adult can partake free of charge.
Entry to both the
race and walk, changing facilities, refreshments and prize giving will all be
centred at the Church Car Park.
*Further
information is available on www.ballintotis.com or by calling the special race line number
086-8778182.
