November 1 – County Junior and Senior Cross Country Results

This event was held today in Clonakilty.  Many thanks to Bandon AC and the West Cork Board for hosting the event.  An overnight deluge resulted in very poor underfoot conditions which made taking part and finishing a big achievement for all the participants.

Michelle Hartnett of Grange Fermoy was an impressive winner of the junior womens race as was Ryan Creech of Leevale in the Junior mens race.

A late surge by 2008 champion Rhona Lynch of Eagle was not enough to prevent Lizze Lee of Leevale maintaining her perfect record this current cross country season.  In October she won the County and Munster Novice cross country titles.  Mark Hanrahan of Leevale successfully defended his title shirking the challenge of East Corks Sean McGrath over the last lap of the race.

In the Inter Club Competitions, Blarney Inniscarra won the junior womens title ahead of Bandon.  Togher retained the junior mens ahead of Blarney Inniscarra athletic club.  Eagle retained the senior womens title ahead of Leevale and Bandon.  East Cork retained their mens title for the 7th year in a row with Leevale second ahead of Togher.  The B section results will be confirmed at the next county board meeting.

Shirley O’ Shea, Senior Health Promotion Officer, HSE South said “This group is planned to encourage people to get involved in activities who are new to exercise or would like to get fit as part of a group. We are working with local communities and facilities to ensure there are specific activities suitable for beginners and those with low fitness levels as it all about offering people in these communities an opportunity to get active, meet other people and socialise." So just turn up on your own or even better bring a friend, relative or neighbour who you can train with in between group sessions”.

Olympian Olive is Sportswoman of the Month

Cork’s World Championship wins coveted award

Dublin, Wed., 17th Sept 2009: Cork’s World Championship star, Olive Loughnane has been named The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council ‘Sportswoman of the Month Award’ for August today for her superb performance in the twenty-kilometre walk at the Berlin eventlast month. The thirty-three year old, took silver, finishing just 49 seconds behind defending champion and Olympic gold medalist Olga Kaniskina of Russia in 1:28.58. In soaring temperatures, Olive held off the challenge of China’s Hong Liu with 12 seconds to spare to take her first major championship medal, walking a season’s best. Olive lives in Coachford with her husband Martin Corkery, a former Cork footballer, and young daughter Eimear. She is only the fourth Irish athlete ever to have won a World Championship medal, joining Eamonn Coghlan (gold in 1983), Sonia O’Sullivan (silver in 1993 and gold in 1995) and Gillian O’Sullivan (silver in 2003), also in the 20km walk.

It is exactly a year since Olive won a 2008 Sportswoman of the Month Award for Ireland’s best result in track and field at the Beijing Olympic Games, when she finished seventh in the 20km walk. Encouraged by that performance, in which she knocked 93 seconds off her personal best and finished just one minute and 14 seconds behind the gold-medal winner, Olive was convinced she hadn’t past her best yet and announced her plan to compete in the London 2012 Olympics. Her recent performance in Berlin suggests she is one of Ireland’s top hopes of bringing home an Olympic medal.

“It is a honour to receive this Sportswoman of the Month Award and to be in the company of other monthly winners like Katie Taylor, Derval O’Rourke and Mary Cullen, said Olive of her award win. “It was only when I came home that it struck me what I achieved in Berlin. The crowds that turned out on Loughrea and Coachford were amazing. The World Championships was a significant step for me and has given me the confidence I need for the next three years, in looking forward to London 2012”.

Being in Berlin was a testament to Olive’s strength of character having suffered a chronic iron deficiency following the birth of her daughter Eimear three years ago. Olive, alongside previous monthly nominees, will battle it out for the title of Sportswoman of the Year at an awards ceremony in Dublin in January 2010.

Established in 2004, the Sportswoman of the Month award recognises the abilities and achievements of women in Irish sports, with the judges selecting a winner each month for her ability to excel at sport. The  monthly and annual winners are decided by a judging panel, which is represented by individuals from The Irish Times, RTÉ, and the Evening Herald.

Further details on the Sportswoman of the Year Awards can be found on www.irishtimes.com/events/sportswoman/.

Day 2 Summary

200m Final

100m Final

August 19 – Well Done Derval!

Derval O’Rourke of Leevale was 4th tonight in Berlin at the World T&F Championships in a thrilling 100m hurdles final in a new national record time of 12.67.  The 2006 world indoor 8hudrle champion has had a frustrating season due to injury and had not been expected to do so well.  She qualified as a fastest loser from the semi final and was in lane 1 for the final.  Inside lanes seem to suit Derval though and she had a wonderful start matching the race leaders stride for stride for nearly the whole race crossing the finish line in 4th place.  This is the best performance of an Irish Sprinter in the modern era.

Best of Luck to David Gillick in the 400m Final!

August 16 – Well Done Olive!

There was a great boost for Irish athletics this afternoon with the news that Olive Loughnane won silver in the womens 20K walk in Berlin at the World T&F Championships.  The Galway native (but based in Cork) had a great performance working her way through the field in the early stages of the race and eventually up the second in the last 2 Km.  This was a great performance for Olive who was Irelands top athlete at the Beijing Olympics last year.  Ireland last won a medal in these championships in 2003 in Paris, incidentally also in the Womens 20K Walk.

Robert Heffernan of Togher was 15th in the mens 20K walk yesterday.  Rob was disappointed with his performance but his preparations this year have been upset by injury.  Nevertheless, 15th in the world is a very impressive performance.

The world T&F championships are being televised on Eurosport & BBC.

Cross Country League for Women
At the 2009 County AGM a motion was passed that the Womens Inter Club (novice, intermediate & senior only) Cross Country Championships be run as a league incorporated into the county novice, intermediate and senior individual championships.  The county under 23 and masters women championships will be unaffected by this change.
This motion was passed in response to a very poor entry in the county womens cross country events in recent years, particularly this year.  The aim of this proposal is to improve participation by women in our cross country events.
If this move is to be a successful, it is to important Clubs and interested parties contribute their ideas and views.  It should not be assumed somebody else will do this for you, if you have a view or idea let us know.
Time Line:

Mar 8 – Busy Day in Athletics

Well done to Mary Cullen who won bronze in the 3000m in the European Indoor Championships in Turin today.  The Irish Womens 4x400m relay team finished a creditable 4th.  This team boasted 2 Cork athletes, Marian Andrews of Togher who ran the first leg and Jessika Zebo who was a sub for the team.  Overall the Irish performance at these championships was very encouraging and hopefully we see more good results for International Irish athletes in the 2009 outdoor T&F season.

There was a huge field in the Ballycotton 10 today.  The weather was not too bad but athletes were faced with a strong headwind for the first 5 miles.  Vinny Mulvey of Raheny Shamrocks retained the mens title while Pauline Curley won the womens race.  Sean McGrath was the first Cork man home in 5th place overall while County Senior Cross Country Champion Rhona Lynch of Eagle was the first Cork woman home finishing 3rd overall.  Well done to all who took part today and all who worked so hard today and over the last few weeks and months to make the race such a success today.  The next road race in Cork will be the Rising Sun 4 Mile RR on March 17th – see www.risingsunac.com

‘There were some outstanding performances yesterday by Cork athletes competing in the All-Ireland Schools Cross-Country Championships held in the University of Ulster Jordanstown. In the Junior girls race Blaithin Lynch representing St Mary’s Midleton came 5th, in the Junior boys race Ian Hartnett Colaiste Daibheid came 6th and in the intermediate boys race Danny Mullins St Gobans’s Bantry came 6th and Patrick Coleman Douglas Community School came 10th. All four athletes were selected on the Irish Schools Cross-Country team for the international race in Wales on March 28th. History was also made for Douglas Community School as they won their first ever All-Ireland team title when winning the Intermediate boys race. The team comprised of Patrick Coleman, Peter Hanrahan, Cullen Lynch, Mark Seacy, Ian Tobin, Emmet Bracken, Andrew O’ Keeffe and Conor Foley.  Well done to all who took part.  Full results see www.athleticsireland.ie.

The universities cross country championships were also held yesterday full results are available on www.iuaa.org.

Mar 7 – Derval is back in the Medals

Yesterday turned out to be a great day for Irish athletics.  Cork’s Derval O’Rourke of Leevale, the 2006 World Indoor 60 m Hurdle Champion, put two very frustrating years behind her to take bronze in the 60m hurdles at the European Indoor Championships in Turin.  Derval got the day off to a great start winning her heat in a time of 8.06 and going on to win her semi-final in a time of 8.00.  Her time in the final (7.97) was a seasons best performance.

Another Cork athlete who did very well yesterday was Marian Andrews of Togher.  Marian, competing in her first major championships, ran exceptionally well in the 400m, qualifying from her morning heat in third place a personal best time of 53.94 seconds.  In the semi final she bettered this time finishing 4th in a time of 53.92 seconds.  Unfortunately with only first three qualifying from the semi-finals, this ends her interest in the 400m individual event bt expect to see her in action again in the 4x400m relay on Sunday.  Jessika Zebo of Leevale is also on this team.  Best of luck to them both.

This morning Ailis McSweeney of Leevale competed in the 60m finishing in a time of 7.51 missing out on qualification for the semi finals.

The Irish team has done exceptionally well in these championships so far – every Irish athlete has neared their personal bests or qualified through to the next round.  While it was very disappointing to see David Gillick exit the championships in the 400m semi final, this should not be allowed to distract from or overshadow the achievements of the other athletes on the team this weekend.  Well done to all who competed so far and best of luck to them in their remaining events.

For more information see www.athleticsireland.ie, www.european-athletics.org.  Live action on Eurosport and BBC

Highlights on RTE at a 11.10pm tonight and 10.55pm tomorrow night.
