College in Limerick today. The course
and weather were fine but unfortunately heavy ran during the last few days
resulted in very poor underfoot conditions.
Donnacha O’Mahoney of East Cork had a very easy win in the masters race
finishing well ahead of second placed athlete Cathal O’Connell of St

performances by other athletes with Eamonn McEvoy of he Barrs winning the over

Carmel Parnell of Leevale had a very impressive run to finish second
overall winning the over 50 category.

December 3 – AAI EGM
The AAI held an EGM today in the Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise. The EGM had been called to change the AAI
constitution. Cork had 24 delegates at
the egm, the biggest delegation of any county.
A number of amendments to the constitution were passed. The Egm went well, most of the proposals by
Cork were accepted while a few were not accepted. While a lot of work was done getting the organisation to this
stage, it is in a sense the easy part.
Over the next few months ambitious plans relating to membership, coaching
etc. will be unveiled. The implementation of these plans will
require a huge amount of effort. With
fewer volunteers prepared to step forward to take officer positions at either
county, provincial or national level; most positions are being filled uncontested
or are not being filled. For these
plans of the association to be realised the next generation of officers will
have to start appearing. Anybody who
wishes to take up a position at either county, provincial or national level
should inform their club and county board as soon as possible as AGMS will be
taking place in the next few months.

November 20 – Cooke’s Good Form continues
in the US
CHINO, California - Arkansas Tech Golden Suns sophomore cross
country runner Aoife Cooke (Youghal Athletic Club) made history here
once again Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Division II National Championship Meet
held at Prado Park and hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. Cooke, who was Tech's first-ever NCAA regional champion in cross
country, became the school's first-ever All-American in cross country as she
finished ninth at Saturday's national championship meet. Cooke ran a time of
21: 35 over the 6,000meter course.
The 21: 35 time was Cooke's second fastest 6K
time on the season as she ran a season-best 21: 21 at the NCAA South Regional
meet two weeks ago. "I am very
proud of Aoife and all she accomplished for only being a sophomore," Tech
Head Cross Country Coach Tom Aspel said. "It was a strong field of
runners and she was right there throughout most of the race with the top
finishers, but faded down the stretch."
Aspel
said the course conditions were tough for Saturday's race. "The course was tight as the
competitors were bunched together, plus, it was sunny and warm afternoon with
temperatures in the low 80’s," Aspel added. Grand Valley State's Mandi Zemba won the NCAA women's individual
title as she ran the 6,000-meter course in 21:01.7, while Western State's
Esther Komen ran a 21: 12.9 to finish in second place.
In addition to earning All-American honors this
season and winning the South Regional Meet and being named the South Regional
Female Athlete of the Year, Cooke also became Tech's first-ever Gulf South
Conference individual cross country champion, as she won the GSC Championship
Meet in a school-record 5K time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds. .
On
the season, Cooke won five of the seven meets she competed in, including
bettering the school-best mark five times. The only races she did not win was
the Chile Pepper X-C Festival in Fayetteville and the NCAA D-II
Championships. Aoife Cooke will compete
with her Club, Youghal AC in next weekend’s National Inter-County Championships
in Sligo (Ger Flanagan Youghal AC)
November 20 – County Novice B Cross
Country Championships
The County Novice B cross country championships were held today in Gour
near Castletownbere. This was the first time a county championship event was
held on the Beara peninsula since 1969 when the BLE County Ladies Cross Country
Championships were held. A special
thanks to Beara athletic club for organising the event and the O’Neill family
for allowing their lands be used. The
course was flat and overall underfoot conditions were not bad. The weather was ideal with athletes and
spectators able to enjoy both the competition and wonderful scenery around the
course.
Back in 1969 Beara won the BLE Ladies Cross Country Championships and
today the Beara Ladies won another county title winning the Ladies Novice B
team competition with a clean sweep of the individual medals. First home for Beara was Annette Dreher
followed by Benedicte Coleman in second and Sorcha Coleman third.
The mens race was a close affair with Tom Laffan of Bandon and Denis
Coughlan of St Finbarrs battling it out for the title. At the half way mark Laffan overtook the
lead from Coughlan. Laffan however was
never able to open up the gap between himself and Coughlan and coming down the
home straight Laffan was overtaken by Coughlan. Despite a brave effort by Laffan to retake the lead Coughlan held
out to win his first county title.
Laffan took silver with his club mate Joe O’Sullivan finishing third. Bandon won the team competition.
There was some impressive performances in the juvenile B races. Youghal athletes made the long journey from
East Cork down and were rewarded with a number of individual and team medals. It was encouraging to see the host club and
Dohenys of Dunmanway winning a number of team medals. Well done to all who took
part and best of Luck to the athletes who will go on to compete in the Munster
B’s in Limerick in December. Results
November 13 – County Senior Cross Country
Championships
The County Junior and Senior Cross Country Championships were held today
near Riverstick. Host Club Rising Sun,
hosting their first county cross country championships, did an excellent job
organising the event. Many thanks to Ruth and Jimmy Murray for allowing their
lands be used for the event. The
weather was ideal with almost uninterrupted sunshine for the competition. Underfoot conditions were good for the most
part but parts of the course were pretty mucky after the recent heavy. A stiff climb in the course also put it up
to the athletes.
First Race of the day was the junior womens race. Last year this race
was dominated by Duhallow athletes with Michelle Finn taking gold. This year Belgooly athlete Lorna Comyn
dominated. Lorna Comyn of Belgooly who
has only recently taken up the sport went into the lead early on and was never
challenged. She took gold leading
Belgooly to their first county junior womens tile. Lst year’s winner MichelleFinn of Duhallow took silver helping
her club finish 2nd. Joyce Curtin of Glenbower was third while Ballincollig
took bronze in the team competition.
The junior mens race was controlled throughout by defending champion
Ciaran O’Lionaird of Leevale. The
European youth olympics medallist came under some pressure from his club mate
John Shine early on but held out to take gold.
John Shine was second ahead of Kevin O’Brien of Glenbower. Glenbower retained the team title while
Togher were second with Leevale third.
Louise Cavanagh of UCC was a very impressive winner of the senior womens
race. She took the lead from the
whistle and was never seriously challenged, comfortably retaining her
title. The silver medal went to the
Ballycotton 10 winner Claire Gibbons of Leevale. Third place went to the experienced Carmel Parnell of
Leevale. The world masters 10000m
champion ran a very good tactical race gradually moving up through the field to
take third. Leevale won the senior
womens team competition with St Finbarrs second.
The final event of the day was the Senior mens race. A big field took part, which is very
encouraging for athletics within the county.
European junior cross country medallist Mark Hanrahan of Leevale took an
early lead in the race. After the first
lap defending champion Brian McMahon of Carraig na bhFear mounted a serious
challenge on Hanrahan moving up on his shoulder. An injection of pace by Hanrahan saw him pull clear of McMahon
whose challenge faded. During the third
lap fellow European Junior Cross Country Medallist Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick
Kinsale moved onto Hanrahan’s shoulder.
Hanrahan responded with an injection of pace opening a gap on McCarthy
which was never closed. Hanrahan took
gold ahead of Munster Intermediate Champion Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick
Kinsale with Sean McGrath of East Cork taking bronze. McGrath and a good run by 2003 champion Donnacha O’Mahoney helped
East Cork successfully retain their title for the third year running. Togher were second, led home by David
Doherty in 5th. Leevale were
third. St Finbarrs won the B section
ahead of Carraig na bhFear, competing for the first time, while Eagle took
bronze. Well done to Denis McCarthy of
East Cork who was competing in his 25th consecutive County Senior Cross Country
Championships today.
Many athletes who finished in the top ten in their races today will be
named in the County teams for the national inter county cross country
championships in Sligo on Sunday, November 27th. Anybody unavailable is asked to contact the
county team manager, Joe O’Flynn on 087 6483532.

November 7 – Cooke on Form in the US
DADE CITY, Florida - Arkansas Tech Golden Suns sophomore cross
country runner Aoife Cooke of Youghal Athletic Club continued to set records
and make history here Saturday at the NCAA South Regional Meet at the Little
Everglades Ranch hosted by Florida Southern College and Saint Leo University.
Cooke
made history as she became Tech's first-ever regional champion in cross country
as she won the women's meet in a school-record time of 21 minutes and 21
seconds. She broke her own record of 21:41.4 which was set earlier this season
at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. Tampa's Allison Macsas was right
behind Cooke, as she finished second after running a time of 21: 28. With her win on Saturday, Cooke becomes
Tech's first-ever runner to qualify for the NCAA Championship Meet in school
history. This year's championship meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 at
Pomona, Calif.
"I
am very proud of Aoife and all of her accomplishments this season," Tech
Head Cross Country Coach Tom Aspel said. "It was a tough race for
her today and she really was pushed, especially near the end, but she had
enough to hold on."
Prior
to Cooke's first-place finish Saturday's, the best previous finish by a Tech
runner at NCAA Regionals was a 10th place finish by former Tech runner Siobhan
Lenihan at the 2000 NCAA South Regional at Jacksonville, Fla. It was the fifth time this season that Cooke
had broken a school-best mark as she broke the school's 5K mark three times and
the school's 6K mark twice. At the
meet, the top four teams and top four individuals not from among the top four
teams automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship Meet.

Piltown, Co. Kilkenny today. The course
seemed to have either held up remarkably well or missed the recent torrential
rain that has fallen in Cork. The
underfoot conditions were ideal and the sun was shining for most of the
competition.
The men’s intermediate race was first off. Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick Kinsale and
Sean McGrath of East Cork were among the leaders during the first lap. As the race progressed McGrath and McCarthy
emerged from the leading group to battle it out for first place. With two laps to go McCarthy started to move
away from McGrath and held on to win gold.
This is his second Munster medal this season having won silver at the
Munster Under 23 cross country championships two weeks ago. McGrath took silver leading East Cork to
gold in the inter club competition. The
County team won gold.
The women’s race was dominated by the winner Orla Power of
Carrick on Suir. Dawn Kelly of Belgooly
went into a early lead in the race but was overtaken after the first lap. County Intermediate Champion Anne Kelleher
of St Finbarrs had a very good run keeping up the pressure on Power throughout
never letting her get comfortably in front.
Kelleher finished second leading her club and county to gold.
So far it has been almost a clean sweep for the county at
the Munster cross country championships only missing out on gold in the Womens
under 23 championships where no county fielded a team. Well done and thanks to all who have lined
out for the county to date. The next
Munster Fixture is the Masters Cross Country which will take place in Limerick
in December.
At the Juvenile race there once
again many impressive performances by Cork athletes. Lorna Comyn of Belgooly, who only recently took up the sport was
a very comfortable winner of the under 18 girls race leading the county to
silver. Duhallow took silver in the
inter-club competition. European Youth
Olympics medallist Ciaran O’Lionaird of Leevale continued his good season
winning the under 18 boys race. The
county team took bronze here with Glenbower taking bronze in the team
competition. Results

October 24 – Munster Novice & Under
23 Cross Country Championships
The first round of the Munster Cross Country Championships took place
in Ennis today. The course located in St Josephs Hurling Club was for the most
part flat but incorporated a testing hill.
Thankfully they seemed to have got off very lightly compared to Cork as
regards the rain that fell last week and underfoot conditions were very good. The weather yesterday was good with the
heavy rain only starting to fall during the last race of the day.
The Novice and Under 23 races proved to be very successful for Cork
athletes. Mark Hanrahan of Leevale was
an impressive winner of the under 23 race.
He took the lead early on with Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick Kinsale
following. McCarthy drifted back from
Hanrahan as the race progressed and Hanrahan enjoyed a comfortable victory with
McCarthy taking silver and Thomas Maunsell of Leevale taking bronze. The county team won gold. In the novice men’s race Sean McGrath of
East Cork finished third helping his club team to win silver and leading the
county team to gold. In the womens
races Orla Drumm of UCC took silver in the under 23 race with Maire Heffernan
of Liscarroll taking bronze. In the

this event. Results

October 10 – Press Release from Bothar
about Mini Marathon.
Presentation to Cork County Board AAI
Evening Echo Cork City Women’s Mini
Marathon marked by Bóthar.
The Cork County Chairman of the
Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI), Mrs Noreen Murphy, was the recipient of
a presentation from Bóthar, the Irish Development Aid organisation at a
function in Cork last week. Speaking at
an evening for all their participants in the recent Cork City Mini Marathon,
Jeremy Meehan, Bóthar’s Director of Education, paid tribute to the work of the
AAI and its volunteers on the Cork County Board. “But for the enormous amount of voluntary effort put in by
committee members and others throughout the year, and especially in the weeks
preceding the event, the Marathon simply could not happen,” he said. “When you consider that this year over 8,500
participants entered, virtually all supporting some worthy cause or charity, it
gives some idea of the scale of the undertaking and the benefits that accrue to
so many people thanks to the work of the AAI.
This was Bóthar’s first year to organise a team, and we wish to
acknowledge the great support and guidance shown to us along the way, both by
the AAI and the Evening Echo. Over 220
runners participated and the feedback has been very positive.” Mrs Noreen Murphy said that she was delighted
to accept the presentation on behalf of all of her colleagues and stressed that
it was very much a team effort. “This
was the 24th event and the biggest yet. Hopefully next year will be bigger again. I would also urge all parents to consider
the value of athletics to young people today.
It is a great way of keeping fit and being involved in your community,
but also a great way to meet other people of a similar age in a positive
environment. We are also delighted that
this particular event is of assistance to many charities and caring groups.”

October 9 – County Intermediate and
Masters Cross Country Championships
The second round of
the County Cross Country Championships was held today near Macroom on the lands
of Cillian & Margaret Lynch. West
Muskerry athletic club did a fantastic job hosting the event. The course was testing but fair and there
was a strong wind blowing but thankfully there was no rain. A number of very exciting races took
place. First Race of the day was the
womens intermediate and masters race.
Ann Kelleher of St Finbarrs won the intermediate race. Anne Cashman & Emma Legrand of Eagle
were in second and third in the intermediate race leading their club team to
gold ahead of St Finbarrs. Mary Sweeney
of St Finbarrs went into the lead at the start and held on comfortably
throughout to win the masters race. St
Finbarrs athletes won all the masters categories - Margo Dinan won the O35,
Angela McEvoy the O40, Mary Sweeney the O45 and Marion Lyons the O50. St Finbarrs won the team competition. Full Results
The men’s
intermediate race was a very exciting affair with Eoin O’Sullivan of
Donoughmore, Frank Hayes of East Cork and Stephen Macklin battling it out for
first place. By the last lap O’Sullivan
looked to be safe in the lead with Macklin well back in second and Hayes in
third. Over this last lap thought, the
gap between first and second closed with Macklin of Togher on O’Sullivans
shoulder with a hundred metres to go.
O’Sullivan dug deep to draw away from Macklin to hold out and take gold
winning Donoughmore’s first individual senior title. Togher won the team competition ahead of Eagle A.C. and Rising
sun. Donnacha O’Mahony of East Cork was
an impressive winner of the Masters race.
This was his first county masters cross country championships and he
looked very impressive, perhaps a man to watch in the upcoming Munster and All
Ireland Masters Cross Country Championships.
Michael Murphy and Eamonn McEvoy of St Finbarrs won the O45 and O50
categories. Frank Hayes of East Cork won the O55 category, while George Webb of
Rising Sun and Willie Neenan of Rising Sun won the O60 and O70 categories. The team competition was won by St Finbarrs
with Rising Sun second. Full Results
Craig Murphy of Togher won the U18 boys race today coming under a lot
of pressure from Mark Fitzgerald of Glenbower in the closing stages of the
race. Glenbower won the team competition here.
Michelle Twohig of Duhallow won the U18 girls race coming late to pass
Sally McCarthy of Grange Fermoy who finished second.
The next county cross country event will be the county senior and
junior cross country championships which will take place on Sunday November 13
near Riverstick. The event is being
hosted by Rising Sun athletic club with the first race starting at 1pm.
October 2 – County Cross Country
Championships Season Begins
The first round of the County Cross Country Championships was held
today in Carrignavar on the lands of Teddy O’Sullivan. Carraig na bhFear athletic club who have a
long history of holding cross country events once again did a fantastic
job. There were some great races today.
This year was the first time that the under 23 County Cross Country Championships
were held and the winner of the men’s race was Kieran Ryan of St Finbarrs while
the women’s race was won by Maire Heffernan of Liscarroll.
The juvenile championships saw a number of athletes impress see Results
September 27 – Cross Country
The first leg of the County Cross Country Championships will take place
this Sunday in Carrignavar where the County Novice A and County Juvenile Uneven
Age cross country championships will take place. Last year the county novice A race was won by Thomas Maunsell of
Leevale with Orla Touhy of Grange Fermoy winning the womens title. The Novice race on Sunday will be held at
12pm with the women on first. The
juveniles will be on after the men’s race.
September 18 – Mini Marathon
The 2005 Evening Echo Cork Womens Mini Marathon was held today in Cork
City. A record entry of well over 8000 took part in this years race making it
the biggest yet. Winner of the race was
international athlete Rosemary Ryan of Limerick who only last week won the St
Finbarrs Blarney half marathon. Second
was local athlete Claire Gibbons of Leevale who won the Ballycotton 10 earlier
on this year. In third place was Cork
Born athlete Niamh O’Sullivan who runs for Riocht. In 4th place was Carmel Parnell of Leevale, who just over a month
ago won gold in the 10,000m at the world masters T&F championships. Well
done to all who registered and took part.
Unfortunately a lot of unregistered athletes took part again, this
continuing abuse of the race by these people will ultimately result in the race
being cancelled. This year it is estimated that over €3 million was raised by
charities. A special thanks to all the
volunteers who helped on the day, there were people still busy at 9pm this
evening tidying up after the race. Without the selfless efforts of these people
there would be no marathon.
September 16 – Mini Marathon Update
The number of entries for the 2005
marathon stood at 7986 last evening after a special opening in Roches Stores.
This means this years race will be
the biggest yet so it is very important that we have plenty of help on
Sunday.
Help will be needed at the Start,
meeting on Copley Street at 11.00am
Stewards are asked to assemble on
Copley street at 12.45pm.
Helpers at the finish need to be in
place by 2pm.
Approximately 100 people are needed
to organise the race on the day. It is
essential that every club does it’s bit to ensure the race is a success. The weather looks fine so once we have
enough help everything should go alright.
Anybody without a number is asked
to call the College of Commerce well before the Race on Sunday. Runners are to go up the front of the race
and the race will start at 2pm.
Wheelcahirs will start at 1.55pm.
September 14 – Cross Country Update

the County had a very successful cross country season with big numbers taking
part in the county competitions and many Cork athletes and clubs going forward
to do well at both Munster and National Competitions. On Sunday September 25th, the divisional cross country
championships are taking place with the Avondhu, East Cork and West Cork boards

September 4 – Midleton Open Cross Country
The Cross Country season got underway last Sunday in
Midleton with the local club hosting it’s annual Open Cross Country. It has been a busy month for Midleton A.C.
who only three weeks ago held their very successful open sports. This popular cross country event once again
attracted athletes from all over the county and beyond. There was a fine course
but unfortunately the weather was not great.
Luckily the weather was not too bad for the early races, which were for
younger athletes. The were big numbers
taking part here with many athletes running in their first cross country
race. Host club Midleton fared well her
with many of their athletes finished in medal positions. The weather took a turn for the worse during
the under 15 girls race when heavy rain started falling making conditions
difficult for athletes. Orla Finn of
Riverstick Kinsale came through strongly in this race to take gold. Eric Curran of Leevale who had a very
successful track season won the under 15 boys race very impressively. His club mate John Collins won the under 17
race. The junior womens race was won by
Lorna Cowen who took the lead early in her race. Collette O’Riordan of West Muskerry won the senior womens race. Bantry athlete Maura McCarthy won the
masters womens race. The reigning
County intermediate champion Sean McGrath of East Cork had a comfortable
victory in the senior mens race.
The Cross Country season continues
this Sunday also with Riverstick Kinsale holding their annual Open Cross
Country. The venue is opposite Kinsale
Rugby grounds on the main Cork Kinsale Road.
The first race is on at 1pm and there will be a team competition. The event will be over in time for the big
Match in Croke Park.

and has won medals with numerous county teams.
August 24 – Mini Marathon
Thanks to all who helped pack the goody
bags on Monday and Tuesday for the Womens Mini Marathon. There was a big effort on Tuesday to pack
the bags and between 7 and 9pm over 3000 bags were packed (25 bags a minute).

Street!
August 21 – National League T&F
League Final
Congratulations to the Bandon who
topped division 1. This is a great
achievement for the clubs involved taking part for the first time this year in
this competition.
August 21 – Great Performances in Turkey
There were some exceptional
performances by Cork athletes at the World University Games in Turkey. Ailis McSweeney who may have been
disappointed by her performance in the 100m final at the national senior T&F
championships had an exceptional run in the 100m final taking silver. Derval O’Rourke also did well taking silver
in the 100m hurdles. Both athletes ran
for the Irish team in the 4x100m relay in which Ireland took silver. A number of other Irish athletes won medals
so well done to all on the Irish team.
See www.leevale.org for more on
Derval and Ailish.
August 13 – Triangular Match
For the last few years a Munster
team has been travelling to Wales to take part in an athletics match against
West Wales. This year for the first
time West Wales travelled to Ireland to take on Munster. The match took place in Kilkenny and for the
first time Leinster also took part.
West Wales established an early lead doing well in the sprints, this
lead was never seriously challenged and Wales had a comfortable victory. Munster had a narrow lead over leinster for
most of the match with the Munster picking up a number of valuable points in
the middle distance races. Leinster victories
I n the relays meant there was an anxious wait for the final results but
Munster held out to finish second overall.
A number of cork athletes were on the Munster team and all acquitted
themselves quite well. This match was
for athletes who had not yet competed internationally so this strong
performance by Munster was encouraging.

Well done to Derval O’Rouke of
Leevale who performed well in the World T&F championships in Helsinki. She qualified from her heat impressively on
a wet Tuesday in Helsinki. On Wednesday
she performed well to finish a respectable 7th in the semi final. She is off now to the World Student games in
Turkey where conditions should be a bit drier and more suitable for
hurdling. Best of Luck also to Ailis
McSweeney of Leevale who is a member of the Irish Relay team there.
August 9 – Midleton Open Sports
Midleton athletic club hold their
open sports this Sunday in Midleton CBS grounds starting at 2pm. The sports which is one of the last of the

May 13th – County Masters T&F
The first leg of the county masters T&F championships were held this
evening in the CIT Track. A strong wind
made it a cold evening. The numbers
taking part were encouraging. The
masters 1500m race was an exciting affair with Michael Murphy of the Barrs
battling it out with Denis McCarthy of East Cork to be first over the
line. There was an equally thrilling
women’s race with Margo Dinan of the Barrs finishing just ahead of Claire
O’Brien of East Cork again. Frank Stam
of Leevale impressed winning the discus with a throw of over 30 metres. Liz Coomey dominated the O35 events winning
the shot 100m, discus and long jump.

May 1st – Munster Junior & Under 23
Track and Field
The Munster Junior and Under 23 T&F Championships were held today in
the CIT Track. Blustery winds
frustrated many athletes in their attempts to get good legal times but there were
some thrilling races. The junior mens
100m was a very close affair with Greg O’Leary of Leevale edging out his club
mate Derek Duff only by a thin whisker.
The places were reversed in the 200m.
Kieran Weir of Togher won the 400m.
In the field events Chris Crowley of Belgooly had a double winning the
long and high jump. His club mate Tom
Cross took gold in the junior javelin.

March 11th – St Patrick’s Day 60m Dash
The St Patrick’s Day 60m Dash was launched tonight in the Market
Tavern. This event now in its 36th year
attracts some of the county and country’s top sprinters. Last year Ailis McSweeney and Jer O’Donoghue
of Leevale were the fastest woman and man in Cork at this event. Since last year both athletes have been in
fantastic form both setting new indoor 60m records this season and competing in
the European Indoor Championships in Madrid recently and both will be defending
their titles on St Patricks Day.
Present at the launch were members of the Cork City Sports committee,
members of the County Board, representatives of the Cork Junior Chamber and
media representatives. Lord Mayor Sean
Martin launching the event lauded the effort in organising both the sprint and
Bupa Cork City Sports. He also stated
that more investment in sports grassroots would pay huge dividends.
The event this year is once again been sponsored by the Market
Tavern. This is their eleventh year
sponsoring this event. Their generous
sponsorship means that there will be cash prizes for the sprinters in the
final. Any sprinters interested in
taking part are asked to contact John Sheehan IMMEDIATELY: 086 8548428 or 021 4500530.

March 6th – Great European Indoor
Championships for Ireland
Well done to all the Irish athletes who took part in the European
Indoor Championships. It was a great
weekend for Irish athletics with David Gillick and Alistair Cragg winning gold
medals in the 400m and 3000m. Derval
O’Rourke of Leevale set a new national record in the 60m hurdles. Mark Carroll was 9th in the 3000m
final. Derval O’Rourke set a new
national record in the 60m hurdles and was unlucky not to qualify for the
final. Ciara Sheehy and Paul Hession
were very impressive in the 200m. Jer
O’Donoghue and Ailis McSweeny of Leevale competed in their first major world
championships and will no doubt benefit from the experience. It was disappointing that our mens 4x400m
team was not there considering the great Irish talent in the 400m at present,
something even the BBC commentators mentioned before the 4x400m final
unfortunately only the top five teams in Europe were selected along with Spain
so Ireland missed out.
With the track & field season beginning in April clubs should start
recruiting on the back of these successful championships so we will have big
fields at our sports. If any club
requires assistance doing this they should contact the county board – corkathletics@eircom.net.
It would also be no harm for the fact to be highlighted that these
successes came about despite there being only one dedicated indoor track in the
island. Sean Naughton and Nenagh
Olympic AC deserve a lot of credit for the recent Irish indoor successes
particularly in the sprints. These
successes may not have happened but for the track in Nenagh. There is little doubt that if the existing
facility in Nenagh was developed along with at least one more indoor track that
Ireland could enjoy a lot more success internationally. Perhaps clubs and individuals should remind
the Minister of Sport with a letter about the lack of indoor athletic
facilities in the country and ask what happened the proposed Indoor Stadium for
Santry.
March 6th – Ballycotton 10
The Ballycotton 10 was held today.
The race had a record entry of over 2800 and just over 2000 athletes
from all over took part in the race.
The weather was ideal.
The race started at 1.30pm sharp.
Seamus Power took an early lead after the first mile, which was run in
4.13. By the second mile Power had a
narrow lead over last years winner Charles Kiplagat of Kenya and his compatriot
Jackson Kip. Dave Mitchinson of Newham
& Essex Beagles AC joined the leading group at mile 4. For the next three miles the lead constantly
changed. On more than one occasion
Power dropped back from the leading group and looked like his challenge was finished
but on ech occasion he responded putting himself back in contention. The pace was upped with 3 miles to go and
the defending champion Kiplagat drifted away from the leaders. A great battle ensued over the last two
miles and viewers were treated to a sprint finish through Ballycotton village. Mitchinson held out to take first in a time
of 48.26, Kipnetuny was second in 48.30 and Power was third in 48.36. Last years winner Charles Kiplagat was 4th
in 49.32. First Cork man home was
County Senior Cross Country Silver medallist Tim Hartley of North Cork in
seventh. County Half Marathon Champion
Roy Fahy of East Cork was 10th while Wieslaw Sosnowski of Eagle was14th. Claire Gibbons of Leevale who won the
Carrigaline 5 last Sunday won her first Ballycotton 10 in a time of 57.52. Gladys Daniels of DSD was second woman
home. Previous winner Valarie Vaughan
of Blarney Inniscarra was fourth. Results
Well done to everyone who took part and all who helped in the
organisation of the event, which once again was a fantastic success.

road races see Ballycotton Running Promotions
March 5th – Kit Kat All Ireland Schools
Cross Country
The Kit Kat All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships were held
today in Dungarvan. Conditions despite a strong enough breeze were very
good. Underfoot conditions were ideal
with a good running surface for the entire course. The day was also blessed with almost uninterrupted sunshine. The event as usual was well organised and
went off on time and to plan.
Cork had a number of school teams and individuals in action. The best Cork performance was that of John
Shine of Colaiste an Spiorad Naoimh in Bishopstown who finished third in the
senior boys race. Sean Smith of the
North Mon was 4th while Timmy O’Donoghue of Midleton CBS was 5th. Midleton CBS had reason to celebrate in this
race as they successfully retained their team title in this race. They finished on equal points with a Dublin
School but won on count back illustrating how important it is for each member
of a cross country team to finish as high up in the race as they can. Great credit must go the Midleton CBS and
their Coach Liam O’Brien for this fantastic feat. Well done to all the Cork athletes who took part. Results will be available on www.isaa.ie.
March 5th – Gold for Gillick and Cragg
Today was a great day for Irish athletics.
Derval O’Rourke of Leevale got the evening off to a good start
finishing second in her 60m hurdles in a time of 8.02. This is a new national record but more
significantly she finished ahead of the current British number one and the
current European number one who were third and fourth in this heat. Best of Luck to Derval tomorrow in her semi
final and hopefully we will see her in the final tomorrow evening. (coverage on
RTE 2 from 8.35pm tomorrow)
Things only got better as the evening went on. David Gillick had a tough run in the
400m. He was third after the athletes
cut in but was in second place by the time they were starting the second
lap. Over the last 50m the leader,
David Canal of Spain started to fade and Gillick, still only 21, ran past him
to take gold in a time of 46.30. This
is the first time for many in living memory that an Irish athlete has won gold
in a sprint event at a major world championships.
To top the evening off there was a terrific performance by Alistair
Cragg in the 3000m. Corkman Mark
Carroll of Leevale shared the lead with Cragg for the first 1000m but Carroll
drifted back after this. Cragg then
took the lead and set a modest pace for a few laps. He then injected the pace leaving the home favourite Reyes
behind. For the last 1000 metres Cragg
ran about 50 metres ahead of the field and was so comfortable he could indulge
in a bit of a well earned celebration during the last lap. Mark Carroll finished in 9th place.
Well done to both David and Alistair who have given us a great night to
remember.
March 4th – Carroll through to 3000m
Final
Mark Carroll of Leevale qualified comfortably for the European Indoor
Championships 3000m final earlier today.
The experienced Carroll finished 4th in his heat in a time of
7.55.18. He will be joined in the final
by another Irish man the impressive Alistair Cragg who will be the favourite to
take the title. Best of Luck to both
athletes. The final will be televised
live on RTE 2 at 7.15pm tomorrow (coverage starts at 6.15pm). It will be good to see some live athletics
on RTE.
Also running today were Ailis McSweeney and Jer O’Donoghue of Leevale
in the 60m sprint. Both failed to
qualify from their heats. Their times
were slightly slower than the personal bests they have set this season. This is the first time these two athletes
have competed at a major world championships, they are both still young and
very talented and will no doubt benefit from their experience in Madrid.
Derval O’Rourke competes in the sprint hurdles tomorrow. We wish her the best of luck. Also best of Luck to David Gillick in the
400m tomorrow. He ran a personal best
of 46.17 in the 400m this evening.

A 60m dash will be held on St Patrick’s Day before the Parade in Cork
City. The sprint will take place in
front of Brown Thomas. There will be
cash prizes, which are being sponsored by the Market Tavern. Further Details to follow.
Concern was expressed at the meeting about the selection criteria for
the Irish Womens team for the upcoming World Cross Country Championships. The fact that the team for the short course
was selected before the National short Course Cross Country championships was
questioned. It was also pointed out at
the meeting that contrary to media reports, Breeda Dennehy Willis of Bandon
Athletic Club was available for selection for the World Cross Country
Championships. Disappointment was also
expressed at the meeting that Breeda is still owed expenses by Athletics
Ireland. These expenses have been owed
for over two years. The county
secretary was requested to write to Athletics Ireland about these matters. There was also a suggestion that the junior
womens distance be shortened at the national inter club championships to
encourage participation. Duhallow
athletic club was congratulated on finishing 4th at the recent National Junior
Women’s inter club championships.
The county board extends it’s best wishes to Ailis McSweeney, Jer
O’Donoghue, Derval O’Rourke and Mark Carroll of Leevale who will compete in the
European Indoor championships at the weekend.
Best wishes also to Cork born Niamh O’Sullivan of Riocht who competes in
the World Cross Country Championships.
The next County Board meeting will take place on Wednesday April
6th. There will be a juvenile meeting
first so the meeting will start at 7.30pm.
February 28th – Very Busy Weekend Ahead
Next weekend will be a very busy weekend for athletics. Locally the big event will be the
Ballycotton 10 mile Road Race which this year has an entry of nearly 2800. The race will be held on Sunday starting at
1.30pm. There will be a great
atmosphere in Ballycotton on Sunday so it will be well worth a visit. Entries closed before Christmas and since
then the local committee has been working very hard to get everything ready. Assistance is needed to form a human chain near
the end of the race finish. The job
entails reporting for duty at the marquee (school yard) just after the start of
the race (1:45pm). You are then required to take up position just after the
leaders have passed into the finish i.e. 2:30pm. and remain there until 3:30pm
approx. Niall O’Keeffe from the
organising committee is coordinating this area of the race organisation. Anyone
intending to help out should let Niall know of your availability as soon as
possible. He can be contacted as
follows: Mobile: 087-9909758. Email: okeeffe@iol.ie. Best of Luck to all taking part.

recent form. He goes in the 3000m. A full programme is available on www.madrid2005.org and it will be
televised on BBC and Eurosport.

Further details are also available on www.athleticsireland.ie. Best of Luck to all the Cork and Irish

February 28th – Teams for World Cross
Country Championships
Athletics Ireland recently announced the Irish teams for the World
Cross Country Championships, which take place in France on March 19/20. Sadly no athletes registered with a Cork
club have been named. Cork born Niamh
O’Sullivan of Riocht is named on the Senior Women’s long Course team. Mary Margaret Meade of North Belfast is also
named on the team, she competed with UCC in the recent past. Hopefully Cork will be better represented on
Irish Cross Country teams in the future, coaching days to help ensure this long
term have been organised see Coaching.
February 28th – Eagle ‘Carrigaline 5’
The Carrigaline 5 was held yesterday.
There were 173 competitors. The
race had a very close finish with Josh Palmer of Togher fnishing only four
seconds ahead of the Wieslaw Sosnowski of the host Club. Cathal O’Connell of St Finbarrs was
third. Claire Gibbons of Leevale won
the ladies race in a course record. Her club mate Carmel Parnell second and
Mary Sweeney of St Finbarrs third. The race raised €400 for Carrigaline Meals
on Wheels. Results (For full and detailed results see www.eagleac.net)
February 26th – Ballycotton 10 – Appeal for Assistance!
The Ballycotton 10 takes place this year on Sunday March
6th (1:30pm start). In spite of the
early entry cut off date of mid December another record number of finishers
(2000 approx) is expected. As in former years the small local organising
committee have pre-race preparations well in hand. On race day many extra helpers are required to deal with all the
chores that go with organising a race of this magnitude. The response from the
local community (and the many regular outside helpers) as always is tremendous.
But with such a small population to from which to draw help there is always a
shortfall in volunteers.
This year (like last year) it is proposed to form a human
chain from the finish to the changing area, a distance of 1 kilometre. The
purpose is to ensure that the earlier finishers stay to the left hand side of
the road as they return to the school. This will give the later finishers a
clear run to the finish line.
The organising committee are appealing for
assistance from athletic clubs and organisations in this regard. If there are
any willing helpers free on the day it would be very much appreciated if they
could please make themselves available.
The job entails reporting for duty at the marquee (school
yard) just after the start of the race (1:45pm). You are then required to take
up position just after the leaders have passed into the finish i.e. 2:30pm. and
remain there until 3:30pm approx.

committee is coordinating this area of the race organisation. Anyone intending

February 17th – Coaching Day a Great
Success
The Coaching Day held on Tuesday last was a great
success. The weather could not have been
any better with brilliant sunshine throughout, hopefully we will enjoy similar
weather in May. Over 60 athletes
attended the coaching day with athletes benefiting from coaching in the jumps,
hurdles, middle distance, sprints and hurdles.
Athletes who were part of the middle distance group received
coaching advice from former international athlete Liam O’Brien, Bother Dooley
who has coached many of the country’s top middle distance runners and Stephen
Macklin who has played a big role in the recent successes of Douglas Community
School and Togher athletic club. They
were assisted by Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick Kinsale who recently won a
European Junior Cross Country medal with the Irish team. The middle distance athletes were divided
into two groups: 800m & 1500m and 3000m & Cross Country athletes. Both groups did a training session. It is hoped that the advice received, the
training done and meeting with other middle distance athletes outside of
competition will help middle distance running in Cork.
In general athletes who took part in the event were very
happy with the day. Feedback from
athletes about the event is important and comments good or bad can be emailed
to corkathletics@eircom.net.

12th in the CIT Track. Athletes who
have attained the following standards in their events are welcome to attend -

February 2nd - County Board Meeting
There was a county board meeting recently in the SMA Hall in
Wilton. A number of items were
discussed. A request to support
coaching days in February and March was made, the board agreed to support this
initiative with funds raised by the mini marathon see coaching page for
details. Clubs are being notified about
these coaching days.
The board heard at the meeting that the proposed development of a stand
at the CIT Track seems to have fallen through.
This is a big disappointment for athletics in Cork as the CIT Track is
the best track in the country. In order
to make this the premier athletics facility in the country it does need some
shelter for athletes and spectators as well as some extra accommodation for
officials.
The following dates have been set for the County Championships – May 8
& 15th for the County Juvenile T&F championships, May 22nd for the
County Senior Track and Field Championships.

The All Ireland B Cross Country championships were held in Athlone

the run up to the event it was a huge relief from an organising point of view

night. People took time off work to
help at the office during the afternoon and early evening, people travelled from
all over the county to take part and to help out with the stewarding and no
