2003 News Archive November 7th - International Awards Night An International Awards night
will take place on Friday November 28th. Awards will be given to
athletes who represented November 7th - County AGM The County AGM has been set for Saturday January 11th at 2pm in Carrignavar Community Centre. Motions and Nominations for the AGM must be with the County Secretary by the next County Board meeting - December 3rd. Current chairman of the board John Smyth says he wishes to step down. November 5th - County Board Meeting A County Board meeting was held tonight in the SMA Halll in Wilton. A number of items were discussion. The juvenile committee discussed recent fixtures and the forthcoming County B' X-Country Championships which will take place in Carrignavar on Sunday November 23rd along with the County Intermediate and Masters Championships. There will be county B' races for Under 10, 12, 14, 16 & 19 juveniles starting at 12.30pm. Anybody who won a medal in the county or Munster championships cannot take part. Closing date for entries is Friday November 14th. Provisional Munster Juvenile Indoor Championships dates are the Feb 14/15 and Feb 21/22. These dates have not been discussed or approved by the Munster Council yet. Juvenile Committee Chairman Tim Fitzpatrick and County Chairman John Smyth congratulated Skibbereen and Carraig na bhFear on hosting the recent County Championships. Concern was expressed about the lack of toilet facilities at these events. The high cost of the toilets is the reason for the lack of toilet facilities and the matter will be discussed again. The following fixtures were set - Bandon 5 mile, Jan 1st; County Novice Road Championships, Millstreet, Feb 15th; Eagle 5 mile, Feb 22nd. Tommy Murphy of Skibbereen was regraded by the Board. The board nominated individuals to attend the AAI general meeting on Nov 15th in Clonmel. The board also discussed the AGM and international awards night. See above. The next County Board meeting is on Wednesday December 3rd. November 2nd - County Junior & Senior Cross Country Championships The Cork County Junior and Senior Cross country championships take place on Sunday November 9th at 1.30pm on the lands of Sean & Angela O'Lianaird near Macroom. Last year international athletes Robert Heffernan and Valerie Vaughan won the senior races. The senior races will be used to select the Cork team for the All Ireland Cross Country Championships in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on November 30th. Full results will be on this website next Sunday Evening. November 2nd - County Board Meeting There is a County Board meeting on this Wednesday (Nov 5th) in the SMA Hall in Wilton. Juvenile Committee Meeting 7.30pm, Board Meeting at 8.30pm. November 2nd - Cork Novice Men win Munster Title Cork athletes were in action
today in Rathgormack, Co. Waterford at the Munster Cross Country
Championships. A strong wind made
running difficult but this brought out the best in many athletes.
There were some very exciting juvenile races. Ciaran O'Lianaird of Leevale (right) won the under 17 race while Sally McCarthy of Grange Fermoy won the under 17 girls race - impressive as both are still under 16. Craig Murphy of Togher won the under 15 boys race. Daniel Walsh of Glenbower won the under 11 race. Cliodhna Galway of Belgooly won the under 11 race while Rachel O'Shea from Beara got the day off to a good start for cork winning the under 9 race. Cork juvenile teams did well. The Cork under 9, under 15, under 17 and under 19 girls teams won gold. The Cork under 19 boys won gold while the under 9. under 11, under 15 and under 17 teams won silver. The under 11 girls won silver in their race while the under 13 girls won bronze in their race. October 24th - Cork Novice & Under 23 Teams for Munster X-Country Championships Named The Munster Cross Country
Championships will be held on Sunday (November 2nd) in Rathgormac, Co.
Waterford. The programme of events
includes the Juvenile Even Age Cross-Country Championships, which begin at
12.00pm followed by the Munster Novice and under 23 Cross-Country
Championships which are due to get underway at 2pm. There are strong county and club teams in
all races so spectators will be treated some very entertaining competition. The County team manager named the
County Novice and Under 23 teams for the event. The teams will be led by the County Novice

Kelly (Belgooly), Elaine Crowley (Bandon), Frances Regan (Skibbereen). October 19th - County Novice A' Cross Country The County Novice A Cross Country Championships were held today in Carrignavar. Carraig na bhFear A.C. did a splendid job organising the event and great credit must go to the landowner Teddy O’Sullivan for allowing his lands be used for the event. The course was in great condition and spectators were treated to a number of very exciting races. The mens race was a close affair. After 3000m it was a battle between former county Junior Cross country champion Fergus Meade of East Cork and David Doherty of Togher. With 500m to go Fergus pulled ahead to win the race ahead of David. Stephen Macklin of Togher was 3rd. Togher won the team competition ahead of Eagle in second and Donoughmore in 3rd. Other team placing St Finbarrs 4th, Skibbereen 5th and Bantry 6th. The ladies race was a more clear cut race. Sharon McGarry of St Finbarrs took the lead early on in the race and held on throughout despite coming under pressure from Maria Hurley of Bantry in the last 100 metres. County Novice B' champions Frances Regan of Skibbereen was 3rd. Bantry won the team competition. The Cork Team for the Munster Novice and Under 23 Cross country championships will be named during the week. October 13th - County Novice A' Cross Country The Cork County Novice A and Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships are being held this Sunday (October 19th) in Carrignavar. There promises to be an exciting days competition with athletes competing for places on the Cork Novice team for the upcoming Munster Novice Cross Country Championships in Rathgormac, Co. Waterford on Sunday November 2nd. They juvenile races promise to be equally exciting after some very close finishes in the first round of the juvenile cross country championships. The juvenile races start at 12.30pm on Sunday and these will be followed by the County Novice A’ Championships. Results of the races will be published on the County Board website www.corkathletics.org on Sunday evening. October 5th - County Cross Country Championships in Skibbereen The first round of the Cork County Cross-Country championships were held recently in Skibbereen. Good weather and underfoot conditions brought out the best in athletes on what was a tough but fair course. Skibbereen athletic club had a very good day. Great credit must go to the club for organising the event and landowner Derry O’Donovan for allowing his lands be used for the event. The club were rewarded for their endeavours with Frances Regan winning the Ladies Novice B’ race. The Skibbereen Novice B’ mens team also fared well with Billy O’Brien finishing 3rd leading the team to gold. The men's Novice B race was a close affair with a leading group of four staying close together for the first two lap. On the final lap the group strung out with Kieran Hurley of Togher breaking clear to win the race. Ronan Crowley of Leevale was 2nd while Billy O'Brien of Skibbereen was 3rd. Joe O'Sullivan of Bandon in 4th place did remarkably well considering he ran the Cork-Cobh 15 mile road race this morning. Skibbereen won the team competition ahead of St Finbarrs in second. Well done to Bantry on winning their first set of senior men's medals for cross country race. Bantry finished 3rd in the Novice B' mens competition. The ladies race was also a close fought race with Frances Regan of Skibbereen having to work hard to win the race. Cross Country training seems to be good preparation for the 400m hurdles with hurdlers in 2nd and 3rd place. In second place was Susan O'Reilly of Leevale and in 3rd place was Dawn Kelly of Belgooly. Bandon won the team competition. (Results) October 5th - Exciting Race at County Juvenile Uneven Age X-Country. The Boys U19 race held today was a thrilling race. Jaime McCarthy of Riverstick Kinsale and Mark Hanrahan of Leevale ran shoulder to shoulder for almost the entire race. Jaime broke clear with 500m to go to retain his County title. Keith Linehan of Leevale was in 3rd and the Leevale team won the team competition. Aoife Cooke of Youghal dominated the U19 race establishing a lead early in the race to win it comfortably. Marie Heffernan of Liscarroll was 2nd ahead of Aoife McCarthy of North Cork in 3rd. Youghal won the team competition. Ciaran O'Lianaird had a comfortable victory in the U17 race ahead of Glenbower athletes Shane Cotter (2nd) and Joe Fitzgerald (3rd). Togher won the team competition here ahead of Youghal and Skibbereen. Louise Finn of Belgooly and Sally McCarthy of Grange Fermoy were neck and neck throughout the U17 race with Louise Finn only losing Sally in the last 100 metres to win the race. Defending champions Joyce Curtin was 3rd helping Glenbower win the team competition. (Results) October 1st - County Board Meeting A county board meeting was held tonight in the SMA Hall Wilton. A number of items were discussed. The mini marathon committee thanked all the club's for helping with the min marathon. Race Director Pat Buckley outlined the huge amount of work involved in organising the event. County Team Manager Joe Flynn asked that all athletes interested in running on the County Team for the Munster U23 & Novice Cross Country Championships to contact him. A report from the Munster Council was read and there was no objection to a proposal to wire Nenagh Indoor stadium for Electronic Timing. A date was set for the County AGM - Saturday Jan 10th 2pm, Carrignavar Community Centre. The next County Board meeting will be on Wednesday November 5th in the SMA Hall Wilton. Juvenile meeting 7.30pm and Senior Meeting at 8.30pm. September 28th - Cross Country Starts The first County Championship Cross Country Event takes place on
Sunday (October 5th) in Skibbereen where the County Novice B and Juvenile
Uneven age Cross country Championships are taking place. The juvenile races will start at 12.30pm
while the Novice B races will start after the juvenile races. The County Novice B cross-country
championships have always proved to be very exciting and open races with some
very close finishes over the last few years.
There are prizes for the first three teams in the men’s and ladies in
the Novice B championships and juvenile races. The County Novice A and Juvenile Even Age County Cross Country Championships take place in Carraig na bhFear on Sunday October 19th. September 28th - Road Race Results Martin McCarthy was 27th in his marathon in Berlin today. He ran a time of 2.18.45. John Griffin of Tralee Harriers won the Belgooly 10 m RR while Mary Sheehan of Grange Fermoy was the first lady home. September 21st - Belgooly 10 mile Road Race Belgooly Hold their annual 10 mile road race this Sunday (September 28th). This race one of the most prestigious in the county always attracts a big field. Entry is on the day and race headquarters are in Belgooly GAA grounds. The race headquarters will be open from 11.00am. September 21st - County Cross Country Season Dates The County-Cross country Season gets underway on Sunday October 5th with the County Novice B and Juvenile Uneven Age Cross-Country championships taking place in Skibbereen. The County Novice A and Juvenile Even Age Cross-Country Championships take place on Sunday October 19th in Carrignavar. The County Senior and Junior Cross-Country Championships takes place in West Muskerry on Sunday November 9th, while the County Intermediate and Masters Cross-Country takes place in Youghal on Sunday January 11th 2004. September 21st - Another Successful Mini Marathon see the Mini Marathon Page September 16th - Countdown to Mini Marathon!! see the Mini Marathon Page September 7th - County Half Marathon Championships St Finbarrs A.C. hold their annual half marathon this Sunday (September 14th) in Blarney. The race will incorporate the County Half marathon championships. For further details see the the St Finbarrs website. September 7th - Midleton Cross Country Midleton Athletic Club held their annual Open Cross country today. The weather was typical Cross Country weather with rain threatening throughout the fixture. The fixture was run off efficiently and great credit must go to the officials at Midleton A.C. for organising the event. The men's senior race was won by Dennis McCarthy of East Cork. Dawn Kelly was the best placed Cork athlete in the ladies race in 3rd position. Louise Finn of Belgooly won the U18 girls race while Timmy O'Donoghue of Glenbower in 4th place was the top Cork athlete in the U18 boys race. September 7th - 2700 Entries already The mini-marathon office located on the first floor in Merchants Quay
shopping centre has already accepted almost 2700 entries and it is expected
that the 5000 entry limit will be reached before the Closing date September
13th. The mini-marathon office will be open Monday to Saturday this week
between 10am and 4pm. The office will close
on Saturday, September 13th. Unlike
previous years no numbers will be available after September 13th. The Cork mini-marathon office opens today. The mini-marathon office is located on Academy Street in Cork and will be open from 10am to 4pm. It will be open every day with the exception of Sunday until Saturday, September 13th. Anybody who entered by post can collect their goody bag in the mini marathon office on presentation of their numbers. Entry forms and further details are in the Evening Echo. September 1st - Cross Country Season Begins The Cross-Country season will start this Sunday September 7th in Midleton with Midleton athletic club holding their annual Open Cross Country in Castleredmond. There is an impressive programme of events with competition for under 8, under 9, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16, under 18, junior, senior and masters and plenty of prizes in each race. The competition starts at 2pm. August 31st - Blarney Open Sports Blarney Open Sports was held today.
There was a big crowd at the sports and there were some very
impressive performances by a number of athletes. The Andy Vaughan prepetual trophy for the
ladies 1500m was won by Collette O'Riordan of West Muskerry and the MJ
Buckley prepetual trophy for the 1500m was won by Alan O'Shea of Bantry. This sports was the last track and field
fixture of the year. August 31st - Disappointing Run for Sonia Sonia O'Sullivan had a disappointing run in the 5000m final yesterday at the World T&F championships. She looked very nervous on the start line and only figured in the early part of the race. Hopefully with a bit of rest we will see her back in action for the cross-country or the Olympics next year. August 25th - Blarney Open Sports Blarney Open Sports is on next Sunday in the CIT Track. As always there is an impressive programme of events for juveniles and seniors. Entry is on the day and the competition starts at 1pm. August 25th-Good Performances at World Championships There was a fantastic performance by Irish athlete Gillian O’Sullivan in Paris at the world track and field championships recently in the 20 kilometre walk. Gillian who hails from Kerry but often trains in Cork became only the 3rd Irish person to win a medal at the World Track and field Championships winning silver in the 20km walk. This is a brilliant result for the Irish athletics and is the first time an Irish athlete has won a medal in the Walk at a major senior world championship event. Gillian who taught in Scoil Barra in Ballincollig for a spell before going full time into athletics currently holds world records over the 3000m indoor and 5000m outdoor walks. She was 10th in the 20 km walk at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and hopefully if she is on form and stays injury free over the next year we can expect a special performance from Gillian in the Olympics in Athens. Olive Loughnane who hails from Galway who can often be seen training along the Carrigrohane straight was 12th in the 20K walk at the world track and field championships. Cathal Lombard was 17th in the 10000m in a time of 28.36. While
he may have been disappointed with the time as he had hoped to go below 28
minutes, he can be very proud of the fact he took part in one of the greatest
10000m races of all time which saw the great Gebraselassie dethroned by
fellow country man Bikele. Derval O'Rourke was 8th in the 100m hurdles
first round in a time of 13.54. August 22nd -Goody
Bags for Mini Marathon 5000 goody bags were packed this week for the Cork ladies mini-marathon. Between charities and postal entries race director Pat Buckley expects there to be only 3000 entries left when the mini-marathon office opens on Monday. As entry is limited the best way to ensure you get your entry in this week. The mini-marathon office is located at the Evening Echo offices on Academy Street in Cork and will be open from 10am to 4pm. The office will be open Monday to Saturday from September 1st to September 13th. Entry forms and further details are in the Evening Echo. Information is also available on the cork athletics website www.corkathletics.org or email minimarathon@eircom.net August 19th - Goody Bags for Mini Marathon The goody bags for the mini marathon are being packed this week. As there are 5000 bags to be filled help in filling the bags would be appreciated. Those who are available to fill bags should contact Race Director Pat Buckley or email minimarathon@eircom.net. August 18th - Clonakilty 10K Road Race The newest athletic club in Cork Clonakilty Athletic club hold a 10K road race on Friday next (Aug 22nd). Race entry is on the night with T-Shirts for the first 50 finishers and Goody bags for all finishers. August 17th -Mazda League Final There were impressive performances by Cork teams at the Mazda Track and Field League final. In the Ladies division 1 Belgooly put up a great fight to finish 3rd overall. Blarney Inniscarra were 6th in this division. Leevale were 4th and 5th in the ladies and men's premier division. Togher were 8th in the men's division one. (Mazda League Final - Results) August 12th - Woodies DIY National Senior T&F Championships At the recent national senior track and field championships held in Santry in Dublin there was a very encouraging performance by a young Cork athletes. Kathleen Fitzgerald of Leevale who is only sixteen was 3rd in the senior shot competiton Anne Marie Cronin, also sixteen, who competes with the Old Abbey athletic club finished 4th in the hammer competition. Star of the championships was Cathal Lombard of Leevale who won the 5000m almost half a lap ahead of second placed athlete Seamus Power. Sonia O’Sullivan of the Ballymore Cobh club made it a 5000m double for Cork winning her race. Breda Dennehy Willis of Bandon athletic club was 3rd in this race. Freda Davoren of UCC was 2nd in a very exciting 1500m. In the sprints Ailis McSweeney of Leevale, national under 23 100m champion won silver and bronze in the 100m and 200m. Jer O’Donoghue of Leevale completed a successful return from injury finishing 4th in the 100m. Darren O’Donovan of UCC was 5th in the 200m while Brian Murphy of UCC was 6th in the 400m. Jessika Zebo impressed in the sprint hurdles winning silver. Ronan Foolkes of Togher, All Ireland Schools 400m hurdles Champion was 4th in the 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 55.05 seconds. Niall Walsh of Leevale was 4th in the triple jump of 13.15m while Donna Hosford also of Leevale was 5th in the long jump. August 10th -National Masters T&F Championships The national masters track and field championships were held recently in Tullamore. There were a number of very impressive performances by Cork athletes at these Championships. Maura McCarthy of Bantry was an impressive winner of the over 40 long jump. Club mate Marie Hurley also impressed winning gold medals on the track in the 400m. Bandon athlete Carmel McCarthy Crowley had a middle distance double winning the over 35 1500m and 3000m. Liz Coomey of Bandon won the over 35 hammer. Rising Sun athletes won a number of gold medals. Sean O’Sullivan won the over 70 100m, 200m and long jump. Denis Howard won the over 75 28lb for distance and hammer. Brendan Dennehy of Rising Sun who won a Muster Sports star award earlier this year won gold in the over 55 100m, long jump and high jump. Andrea Lazzlo of Old Abbey athletic club won the over 45 56lb for distance with a throw of 6.88m. Batty McHugh of East Cork who recently returned to the sport won the over 55 268lb for distance with a throw of well over 8 metres. Pamela Buckley of St Finbarrs won the over 60 100m and 200m. Club mate Joan Hough won the over 45 1500m. Willie Neenan of Millstreet had an impressive double in the over 70 middle distance races winning the 800m and 1500m. jump of 13.15m while Donna Hosford also of Leevale was 5th in the long jump. August 3rd -Cathal Lombard runs fantastic 5000m Cathal Lombard has qualified for the 5000m in the World T&F Championships running a time of 13.19 well inside the A standard for the 5000m. Cathal has the B standard for the 10,000m and runs in the national senior T&F championships at the weekend. August 3rd -Upcoming Events Liscarroll are holding an Open Sports on Sunday (August 10th) at 1pm in Liscarroll GAA Grounds. There is a very impressive programme of events and as this is the second last open sports of the summer it is a sports well worth attending. Also on this weekend are the National Senior Track and Field Championships in Santry, Co. Dublin. The event sponsored by Woodies DIY will see Ireland’s top athletes in action as they prepare for the upcoming World Track and Field Championships in Paris at the end of August. August 3rd - There were good performances by Cork athletes at the Mazda League and the Masters Track and Field in Tullamore. There will be a full report in the website in the next week. July 29th - County Board Meeting on Wednesday July 30th at 7.30pm in the SMA Hall in Wilton. July 28th - Busy Weekend ahead This weekend will be another hectic weekend for Cork athletes. The National Masters Track and Field Championships are on in Tullamore on Saturday (August 2nd) starting at 11.00am. The second round of the Mazda League is on in Tullamore on Sunday starting at 11.00am. Banteer are holding an Open Sports on Sunday (August 3rd) at 1pm in the Sportsfield in Banteer. Rising Sun hold their annual Open Sports on Monday (August 4th) in the CIT Track starting at 1.30pm. July 27th -Lucozade Juvenile T&F Championships The
Lucozade National Juvenile Track and Field Championships were held in
Tullamore recently and a number of Cork athletes were in action. In
the inter County relays Cork did well winning the girls Under 9 and boys
Under 13 relays. On the boys under 13
team were Simon Holland & Timothy Harrington of Courcies, David Killeen
of Leevale and Andrew Power of Midleton.
The Cork U15 girls team (Claire Looney of Leevale, Caoimhe Morris
& Harriet Cross of Belgooly, Claire Crowley of Bandon and Imelda Morrison
of Youghal) won silver as did the Under 17 girls – Christina Broderick, Mera
O’Connor & Justina Lynham of Belgooly, Paula McCarthy of Bantry and Ellen
Sheahan of Leevale. The Boys U11 and
U17 were unlucky finishing 4th in their relays. At
the juvenile combined events there were impressive performances by
Christopher Crowley of Belgooly and Brendan O’Connor of Beara who won the U17
and U15 competitions. Deirdre Cronin
of Youghal was 3rd in the Under 19 competition. A number of Cork athletes impressed in the All Ireland B T&F championships, hopefully the results will be on the AAI website in the next while. July 22nd - County Juvenile Relay Trials Trials for the County Juvenile Relay teams were this evening in the CIT. Many thanks to Belgooly and Eagle athletic clubs for their co-operation on the night. Those who qualified for relay teams will be competing on Sunday July 27th in Tullamore. Athletes who qualified who are unable to travel to Tullamore for the All Ireland Inter County Relays on Sunday July 27th should contact the County juvenile competition secretary. July 21st - Lucozade National Juvenile T&F Championships Tullamore Last
weekend was an action packed weekend for juvenile athletics. The Lucozade National Juvenile Track and
Field Championships were held in Tullamore and a number of Cork athletes were
in action. Declan Murphy of Carraig na bhFear won the U18 hammer with a throw of over 46 metres, he also won bronze in the discus. Sarah Bradfield of Bandon won the first gold medal of the weekend for Cork winning the U15 discus. Sarah won silver in the javelin. Jamie McCarthy of Riverstick Kinsale was an impressive winner of the U19 3000m ahead of Mark Hanrahan of Leevale. Belgooly
athletic club had a very good weekend.
The club had a sprint hurdles double with Katey Byrd winning the U18
hurdles while Mera O’Connor won the U17 hurdles. Katey and Mera also won their long hurdles
races. Katey also won silver in the
long jump and triple jump. Tom Cross
won the U16 javelin and silver in the triple jump while Christopher Crowley
won the U17 long jump and high jump.
Harriet Cross had a sprint double winning the U14 100m and 200m and won
silver in the long jump. Brendan
O’Connor of Beara had an impressive weekend winning the U15 100m. He won silver in the 100m hurdles and
bronze in the 200m. Paul
O’Flynn of Leevale won the U19 long jump with a spectacular jump of 6.97
metres and hopefully will break the 7 metre mark at the Mazda League in
Tullamore on Sunday August 3rd in Tullamore.
David Quilligan won the U14 long jump.
Donna Hosford won the U18 long jump in what was a clean sweep for Cork
with Katey Byrd (Belgooly) second and Deidre Cronin (Youghal) third. Carl McNamara of Leevale had a sprint
double winning the U17 100m and 200m.
Leevale athletes Greg O’Leary won the U18 100m. Other Leevale athletes to impress in the
sprints were Amy Clarke, Orla Coughlan, Lorna Buckley, Claire McSweeney and
Aileen Pomphrett. Frances
O’Shea of North Cork had an impressive middle distance double winning the U14
1500m and 800m. Togher
athlete Nicole O’Regan had a 400m double winning the U19 400m flat and 400m

won the U18 triple jump. (Cork Results) This weekend will be another hectic weekend for Cork athletes. The Lucozade Juvenile Combined events are on in Tullamore on Saturday (July 26th). The Juvenile B T&F championships and Inter County Relays are on Sunday (July 27th) again in Tullamore while the All Ireland Senior and Master Combined Events are on in Kilkenny also this weekend. Rising Sun hold their annual Open Sports on Monday August 4th in the CIT Track starting at 1pm. July 16th - Donoughmore 7 The 21st Donoughmore 7 mile road race takes place this Friday (July 18th). A non-competitive walk takes place at 7pm while a fun race is on at 7.30pm. The main event, the 7 mile road race gets underway at 8pm. Entries will be accepted on the night and race headquarters is at Donoughmore Community Centre. July 14th - Cork clubs excel at Mazda League Last
weekend was an action packed weekend for athletics in Cork. The first round Mazda League was held in
the CIT Track recently and a number of Cork clubs took part. Leevale
represented Cork in the premier division and did very well. At the end of the day they finished 2nd in
the women’s competition and 3rd in the men’s competition. There were good performances by a number of
Leevale athletes in the competition with – Deirdre Murphy, Kathleen
Fitzgerald, Aisling Maunsell, Ailis McSweeney and Paddy O’Gorman all winning
their events. In
the women’s division 1 there was a very impressive performance by Belgooly
Athletics Club who finished joint first in their pool, pool 1. Dawn Kelly, Louise Finn, Mera O’Connor,
Susan Hoare, Christina Broderick and Katey Byrd all performed well in their
competitions and topped off the day winning the their 4 x 100m relay. Avondhu were also in this pool and finished
in third place. There were good
performances for Avondhu by Maire Heffernan, Aisling O’Regan, Bobby Crowley
and Eleanor O’Gorman. Blarney Inniscarra
topped the division 1 pool 2. There
were notable performances here by Deirdre Cronin, Margaret McCarthy, Marie
O’Connell, Valerie Vaughan and Edel Meagher. In
the mens division 1 Avondhu fared well finishing 2nd in pool
2. Thomas Quaid, Brendan Dennehy, Pat Mulcahy
and Kevin Downey all performed well for Avondhu with Pat winning the high
jump. Muskerry finished 4th
in this pool, good performance for Muskerry by Sean O’Sullivan and their
relay team her. Togher finished 4th in
pool 1 division 1. There were good
performances by Togher athletes Ronan Foolkes, Tony Lilly, Josh Palmer and

next round of the Mazda League is on Sunday August 3rd in Tullamore. July 14th - Good Performances at Lucozade National T&F Championships There
were some very impressive performances by Cork athletes at the Lucozade Sport
National Juvenile Track & Field Championships held recently in
Tullamore. Rachel O’Shea of Beara, Denis
O’Sullivan and Great Okafor of Bandon received gold certificates for their
performances at the all Irelands.
Timothy Harrington of Courcies had a gold double winning the U13 high
jump and sprint. Jessica Cross of
Beara won the U12 long jump. Caitriona
O’Callaghan of Grange Fermoy won the U13 long jump and was 2nd in the sprint,
which was won by another Cork athlete – Alex Jenkinson Butler of
Carrigtwohill. A number of other
athletes impressed at these championships – Dean Cronin (Blarney Inniscarra),
Myra O’Sullivan of Bantry, Kelly Tobin of Bandon, Olan Crowley and Simon
Holland of Courcies, Michelle Hartnett of Grange Fermoy, David Killeen of
Leevale and Jennifer Murphy of Belgooly.
In the Relays Grange Fermoy won the U9 girls relay Bandon won the U10
boys relay. Belgooly had an impressive double winning the U17 & U18 4 x
300m relay. Youghal won the U19 girls
4 x 400m relay. Leevale were
impressive in the relay competition win the girls U18 4 x 100m relay. Leevale won silver in the boys U17 relay
and bronze in the girls U17 4 x 100m & girls U18 4 x 300m and the Boys
U18 4 x 100m relays. (Cork Results) July 13th- County Juvenile Relay Trials Trials for the County Juvenile Relay teams will take place in the CIT Track at 7pm on Tuesday July 22nd. These relay teams will be competing on Sunday July 27th in Tullamore. Athletes should only take part if they are able to travel to Tullamore for the All Ireland Inter County Relays on Sunday July 27th. . July 8th - Cork Clubs prepare for the Mazda League Cork clubs are busy preparing for the first round of the Mazda League which takes place on Sunday (July 13th) in the CIT Track. Leevale will be flying the flag for Cork in the premier division fielding both men's and women's teams. In the men's division 1 Togher, UCC, Muskerry (Ballincollig, Blarney Inniscarra, Donoughmore) and Avondhu (Liscarroll, North Cork, Grange Fermoy & Fanahan McSweeney) will be competing while in the women's Division 1 Avondhu and UCC will be competing. The following events are taking place in the division 1 - 100m, sprint hurdles, 400m, 1500m, 3000m S/chase, Relay, long jump, high jump, javelin, shot & 56lb for distance. Events are getting underway in the CIT Track at 11.30am. July 7th - All Ireland Junior & U23 Track & Field Championships. There were impressive performances yesterday by Cork athletes in Tullamore. Conor Sheehy of Togher won the first medal of the day winning gold in the junior triple jump. Thomas McKenna of Ballincollig won the Under 23 triple jump. Ailis McSweeney of Leevale narrowly missed out on qualifying for the European U23 T&F championships running 11.81 in the 100m. The Qualifying time was 11.80. However can take consolation in the knowledge that her time was a championships best performance. Ailis was 3rd in the 200m and helped the Leevale U23 4x100m relay team to gold. Donna Hosford of Leevale won the junior long jump with a jump of 5.34m just ahead of Katey Byrd of Belgooly (5.14m) in second place. Nicole O'Regan of Togher had an impressive victory in the junior 400m hurdles. Her club mate Ronan Foolkes was 3rd in the junior 400m hurdles. Dawn Kelly of Belgooly was 3rd in the under 23 400m hurdles while Jessika Zebo of Leevale was 2nd in the junior 100m hurdles. UCC athlete Bryan Murphy won the under 23 400m running a time of 48.56. Munster 100m champion Darren O'Donovan of UCC was 3rd in the junior 100m. Cork had a clean sweep in the under 23 long jump with Shane Thornton (UCC) winning and Ballincollig athletes Sean O'Sullivan and Thomas McKenna in 2nd and 3rd. Sean O'Sullivan of Ballincollig was 3rd in the under 23 pole vault. The Cork ladies impressed in the field events with Kathleen Fitzgerald of Leevale winning the junior shot while her club mate Deirdre Murphy was 2nd in this competition. Deirdre also won silver in the discus. Anne Marie Cronin of Old Abbey was 2nd in the junior hammer while her sister Linda finished 4th in this competition with a throw that qualified her for the AAA championships in England. Sean O'Sullivan won silver in the under 23 javelin just ahead of club mate Thomas McKenna in 3rd. For a County with a very impressive and proud record in middle distance running the middle distance races were disappointing with only five Cork athletes taking part. Well done to Jennifer Goggin (UCC), Sarah O'Shea and Aoife Cooke (Youghal), David Doherty (Togher) and Aaron Hornibrook (Leevale) who flew the flag for Cork in the middle distance races. Togher won the junior mens 4 x 400m relay in a very impressive time of 3.26.14. Belgooly were unlucky pipped into 3rd in the junior 4 x 400m. Ballincollig were 2nd in the U23 4 x 400m. The Munster Juvenile Outdoor Games sponsored by Lucozade were held yesterday in Waterford. There were impressive performances by Cork athletes in this competition where athletes competed in pairs. (Results) June 29th - Munster U14-U19 T&F Results posted. The Lucozade Munster U14 –
U19 Track and Field Championships were held recently in the CIT Track
Cork. Conditions, although dry, were
testing with a blustery wind swirling across the track. Two Cork athletes really
shone at these Championships. Brendan
O’Connor of Beara had a spectacular weekend winning six gold medals. Brendan won the 100m, 200m, sprint &
long hurdles, long jump and triple jump.
Brendan will now go forward to the All Ireland Track & Field
Championships in July in Tullamore.
Another athletes to shine at the championships was Nicole O’Regan of
Togher who also won six gold medals, comfortably winning the 100m, 200m,
400m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles and long jump. In the middle distance
events a number of cork athletes recorded doubles with Frances O’Shea from
North Cork winning the under 14 800m & 1500m. Sally McCarthy also did this double in the
U16 races. Maire Heffernan of
Liscarroll won the U19 1500m & 3000m while Mark Hanrahan of Leevale did
this double in the U19 boys category. Leevale sprinters were in
flying form with Carl McNamara and Greg O’Leary winning the U17 and U18 100m
& 200m. Carl also won the sprint
hurdles. Katey Byrd of Belgooly won
the U18 sprint and long hurdles and also won the triple jump. Mera O’Connor of Belgooly also had a
hurdles double in the U17 age group.
Club mate Harriet Cross won two gold medals in the U14 competition –
long jump & 200m. Michelle Cronin of Bantry equaled the U16 long jump record while her club mate Paula McCarthy won the U16 javelin, sprint and long hurdles. Rachel Roche of Bandon won the U16 shot and discus. June 24th - Countdown to the Cork City Sports The Cork City Sports will be held in the refurbished UCC Mardyke Track on Saturday July 5th. There is a very impressive list of top athletes taking part with top spot going to Sonia O'Sullivan who will run in the 1500m. Anybody who purchases a programme on the day will be entered in a draw and there are some very good prizes up for grabs. Officials are asked to be at the venue by 12.00pm on the day of competition. Congratulations to Damien O'Donovan who won gold in his Special Olympics event today. Damien who is from Bantry is being sponsored by the County Board under the Support an Athlete initiative. Best of Luck to Damien over the next few days. June 23rd - Cork Athletes excel at Europa Cup A number of Cork athletes impressed at the Europa Cup during the weekend. For a more detailed report see the Leevale Website. June 22nd - County Masters, Juvenile B and Juvenile Multi Events Last Weekend was a very busy weekend for athletics in Cork. The County Masters Track and Field Championships were held on Friday June 20th. A number of athletes were very impressive at these championships. Brendan Dennehy of Rising Sun, a Munster Sports Star winner this year, won the O/55 100m, long jump and high jump. Andrea Lazzlo of Old Abbey dominated the O/45 throwing events winning the shot, hammer, 56lb for distance and discus. Tommy Murphy of Skibbereen won the O45 3000m while Denis McCarthy of East Cork won the O40 3000m. Nuala Crowley and Esther Fitzpatrick of Liscarroll had a good evening in the field events winning the javelin, hammer, shot and discus in their age categories. International athlete Elhana Finnegan won the O45 100m and long jump. Athletes to impress in the middle distance races were Mary Horgan of Donoughmore and Marion Lyons of St Finbarrs. The County Juvenile Multi Events held on Sunday June 22nd proved to be very competitive and enjoyable. Belgooly athletes fared well with Susan Hoare, Ross Kelly, Tom Cross and Katey Byrd all winning gold medals. Other gold medal winners in the multi events were Paula McCarthy (Bantry), Imelda Morrison (Youghal), Philip Burns (Bandon), Brendan O’Connor (Beara), Maire Heffernan (Liscarroll) and Roisin Howard (Grange Fermoy). A number of clubs did very well in this competition with Bantry, Ballincollig, Liscarroll, Beara, Leevale, Grange Fermoy, Blarney Inniscarra, Kilmurry, West Muskerry and Donoughmore all winning medals in this event. (Results) June 16th - Lucozade Munster U9 - U13 T&F Championships There
was some tremendous competition last weekend at the first leg of the Munster
Juvenile Track and Field Championships held in Castleisland, Co. Kerry.
Glorious sunshine brought out the best in many athletes on both days with
many qualifying for the All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships in
July. Hopefully the full results of this competition will be in the

Results Page. (Full Results) June 8th - Munster Senior Track and Field Championships There were very impressive performances by Cork athletes recently at
the Munster Senior Track and Field Championships. Good weather on the day brought out the
best in many athletes who were training very hard in anticipation of this
event. Ailish McSweeney of Leevale had a remarkable sprint double comfortably winning both the 100m and 200m. Darren O’Donovan of UCC matched this feat doing the double in the men’s 100m and 200m. Leevale athletes impressed on the day with Paddy O’Gorman winning the 400m while Donna Hosford won the long jump. Deirdre Murphy of Leevale won the shot competition. Leevale had a double in the sprint relays winning both the men’s and women’s races. Donnacha O’Mahony (Left, purple) of East Cork won the 5000m, the most
exciting race of the day. Desmond
Casey (Left, green) of Millstreet took the lead early in the race and then
led for most of the race. However he
was never on his own and was kept company by Donnacha who overtook Desmond
with 300m to go. Desmond dug deep and
stayed with Donnacha but could not pass Donnacha crossing the line just
behind him. Belgooly athletes impressed on the day. Dawn Kelly successfully defended her 400m
hurdles title. Christopher Crowley
(right) won the high jump with a personal best jump of 1.91m. Christina Broderick had a double in the
jumps events winning both the triple and high jump. The Belgooly ladies 4x400m relay team won
their race. Collette O’Riordan of West
Muskerry won the ladies 1500m. Ronan
Foolkes of Togher, All Ireland Schools 400m hurdles champions added the Munster
Senior 400m hurdles title to his collection with an impressive run in the
hurdles. He also was a member of the
gold winning Togher men’s 4x400m team.

(Full Results) Performance of the day belonged to Jamie Costin (right) of West Waterford
who became only the second Irish man to go under 41 minutes (40.52) for the
10km walk. The County Masters Track and Field Championships will be held on
Friday June 20th in the CIT Track starting at 6pm. The County B’ Juvenile and combined events championships
are on Sunday (June 22nd) in the CIT Track starting at 10.30am. June 7th - Ireland hosts the Special Olympics at the end of
June. Under the ‘Support an Athlete
Scheme’ Cork County Athletic Board has sponsored Bantry athlete ‘Damien O’Donovan’.
Athletic Clubs throughout the county contributed towards this venture,
hosting sports, having collections at training or contributing from club
funds in order to raise the money. A
number of athletic clubs are also involved in separate ventures to raise
money for the Special Olympics. Damien
O’Donovan pictured above with his mother Mary and representatives of Cork
County Athletic Board, will be taking part in the swimming competition and
was recently in Dublin for training.
The County Board wishes Damien and all the Cork participants the best
of luck at the Special Olympics. June 1st—Cork County Senior T&F
championships There were some
very exciting competitions at the Cork County Senior Track and Field
Championships held last Sunday in the CIT Track. Pleasant weather brought out the best in
many athletes. Sean O’Sullivan of
Ballincollig was very impressive winning four gold medals. Sean won the sprint and long hurdles on the
track and won the pole vault and javelin in the field events section. Sprinters Darren O’Donovan of UCC and Ailis
McSweeney of Leevale had doubles winning both their 100m and 200m races. Leevale throwers were to the fore. Joseph Nagle of Leevale won the shot while
club mate Deirdre Murphy did the throws double in the shot and discus. Dawn Kelly had a very fast winning time of
64.7 seconds in the 400m hurdles and won the ladies triple jump. There was a very close finish in the men’s
5000m with Bryan McMahon of Carraig na bhFear holding off a late challenge by
Des Casey of Millstreet. Eoin
O’Sullivan of Donoughmore made a decisive move late in the 1500m to win his
race. Collette O’Riordan had an
impressive double comfortably winning both the 800m and 1500m. These athletes are in action again this Sunday June 8th in the Munster Senior Track and Field Championships in the CIT Track starting at 11.00am. |
